I’m sure many of you can relate to this, but when we were young in school, there is almost always at least one subject that we just did not like. We just didn’t understand it and we didn’t like it. Mine was English. I disliked having to learn about what nouns, adverbs, conjunctions, etc. were. I just didn’t understand it very well. To this day, I remember very little of what I learned in English class. I remember the basic things, but as far as what predicates were, I felt like, What is the point of learning that? I mean, who goes around and tells someone, “Hey, that’s a predicate.” Or, “What is the possessive noun in this sentence?” It really is pointless to learn all of that, and I have forgotten nearly all of that information because I don’t use it.
While it may be ok to forget earthly knowledge, we do not want to forget the teachings of God. The world’s knowledge will pass away but God’s word is forever, and that is what we really need to focus our time trying to increase our knowledge in. When someone first starts a new job, they may not be very fast at it and forget some things that they need to do, but as they continue in it, their knowledge increases and they become better and better, until they get to the point where they they could do the job with their eyes closed, they know it so well.
Well, we want to know the scriptures inside and out, so that if for some reason we didn’t have a bible, we still know what it teaches, because we know it so well. We want to read and study it every day, and apply it to our life daily, so it becomes routine. Some people have a morning routine that they follow. Wake up, brush teeth, make coffee, go to work, come home, etc. We want our life as a Christian to be a constant routine of a life for Christ.
As Christians, we always need to remember what comes first in our life: Jesus. When we remember to put Jesus first in our life, it shows Him that we love Him.
We don’t want to forget God and not come to learn about the scriptures. Some people put the things of the world before spending time with God. Instead of attending a bible study, some people go out for a motorcycle ride, and forget about God. They put the things of the world before the things of Christ.
“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” Hebrews 10:25
When we go to learn about God’s word, we need to pay attention to what is being preached, and apply it to our lives. We need to keep it in our minds so that we don’t forget what God wants us to do. A good way to do this is by singing to yourself. Make up a song about a passage of scripture, and sing it to yourself. There are many songs and hymns that are based out of the book of Psalms, and it really is a great way to keep the things of God in your mind.
“I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me.” Psalm 119:93
“Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.” Hebrews 2:1
Do you spend time with God everyday? Are you seeking to do His will? Are you remembering to keep what God and His apostles taught in your mind everyday?
“That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:” Psalm 78:7
In Christ,
Andrew
