Don’t Let Sin Reign

I like to plant a bunch of different things in my garden. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers peas, zucchini etc. But on our property we have something that is incredibly annoying: thistles. And while they have certain medicinal qualities, they are incredibly invasive, especially in the garden. Unless you somehow manage to find most of the thistle plants in the area and cut them down, they will bloom and release their seeds. Once these seeds make their way into the garden and start to grow, that results in another problem.

See, when a thistle plant gets established in a garden, they are really hard to get out. Thistle roots are very brittle, so when you try to pull them out, they break off easily. You can try to take a shovel and dig them up, but because the roots are so brittle, they break up into small pieces. Nearly each piece, not matter how small, can become a new thistle plant and then it all starts again, only this time is is even worse because now you have several more of them. You really need to catch these plants when they are young in order to keep the roots from spreading to avoid this problem. I sometimes will spread straw around my plants to cover and block those weeds from growing. Left unchecked, thistles would completely cover my garden and I wouldn’t be able to grow anything in it.

Sin, if left unchecked, will destroy a person’s life. Like the thistles, you may start out small with one or two, but unless you remove it from your life, it will spread out into more and more parts of a person’s life.

Look what happened in the Garden of Eden. Because one person sinned, the entire world is now condemned without Christ.

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” Romans 5:12

See how much that one sin spread? It started in the garden, with one person. Now people are all over the globe, and each one of them is a sinner too.

Instead of living in sin, we need to give ourselves to God and let Him reign in our lives.

“Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.” Romans 6:12-13

Just like when I put straw on my garden to cove the thistles, Jesus covers our sins by His death on the cross. He covers and takes away our misdeeds and remembers them no more.

“For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.” Hebrews 8:12

Don’t let sin spread and rule your life. Turn to Jesus and let Him cover your sins, and He will remember them no more.

In Christ,

Andrew
