Evil speaking

Good morning and welcome in today. Today we’re going to look at a passage of scripture from Titus Chapter 3 but before we do that I wanted to ask you a question.

How many times have you gone to the grocery store and when you went to check out you noticed all the tabloids and gossip magazines next to the cash register. There are people who make lots of money each year involved with these kinds of businesses. Gossiping about others is forbidden in the Christian faith. Gossip is when a person repeat stories about others or talks of rumors involving the personal lives of other people to a third party. Spiritually speaking, gossip is sharing information that should not be shared with others. It doesn’t matter if it’s true or false. There’s many people who feel that they are shining a light while the truth is they are just spreading gossip.

Another definition for gossip is a person who spreads intimate or private rumors or facts about another person. This is what it means to speak evil of somebody else.

Titus 3:2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

The definition of a gossip is someone who reveals personal information about others. Evil speaking is a terrible thing because it can hurt someone’s reputation in the community, hurting their business and personal life. Just because it’s true doesn’t mean that you should tell others about it. Love covers sin, not expose it to others. God wants us to be in control of the tongue.

James 3:3-8

Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

The tongue can be used to help and edify your neighbor or to tear them down and hurt them.

For example, let’s look at an event in the life of Noah.

Gen 9:20-27

20 And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:

21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.

22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without.

23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.

24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.

25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.

26 And he said, Blessed be the Lord God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

27 God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

Here’s an example of speaking evil of your own dad. In this case if it hadn’t been for their dad they would have all died in the flood, but the son found fault and gossiped to his brothers about it. The older brothers wouldn’t even look at the sin of their dad but completely covered it up.

Proverbs 11:13 – A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

What is the point of gossip if it is not to elevate yourself and make yourself appear more righteous than other people?

Proverbs 21:23 – Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.

What is the point of Gossip if it is not to make yourself appear in a better light than others? I’ve got news for everyone, we are all sinners who come short of the glory of God. We are all sinners who are in desperate need of God’s grace and the blood of Jesus Christ to cover all of our faults.

Proverbs 20:19 – He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets:

Gossiping about others is to elevate yourself in the eyes of the world. Isn’t that exactly what the proud pharisee did when he prayed to God ” I thank thee that I am not as other men are?” Gossip is caused by pride. Gossip doesn’t help the other person it only hurts them. Treat others the exact same way you want to be treated. If the tables were turned around, how would you feel?

Prov 18:8 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

It really hurts when a friend that you really care about turns on you and tells everybody about your personal and private issues.

James 4:11-12 – Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law:

Psalms 34:13 – Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.

Gossip is a sin in the scriptures. It goes completely against Christian charity. Imagine confessing your faults to a brother in the church and then they go out and tell everybody about it. That’s not love. God wants us to put evil speaking away. Be very careful about what you say about others.

Ephesians 4:31 – Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

I think that’s where I’m going to stop for right now but Lord willing, we’ll talk to you some more tomorrow. Till then, bye-bye everybody.♥️
