Do you have a dog? We have had a dog for a little while now, and something that she loves to do is chase down anything that we throw. She will drag up sticks and baseballs and wait anxiously for us to throw it so that she can go and chase it down again. And again. And again. Trust me, your arm will get tired out before she will.
Or maybe you have a cat. Something that nearly all cats love to do is chase mice. We have a handful of chickens and inside their coop we have a bin filled with corn that sometimes attracts mice. Our cats know this very well, and will regularly visit it, searching for a meal. Sometimes they will just sit there and wait until a mouse shows up and they will chase on after it.
These animals have a very seeking heart. They consistantly are seeking after those things. We should be seeking after the things of God in this same way.
Our days should be filled with seeking to learn how we can consistantly learn more and more about the word of God and how to please Him.
We need to seek how to show love to others more perfectly. Putting the needs of others before our own, as Christ did. Paul wrote to the Philippian church,
“If there be any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
Fulfill ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:” Philippians 2:1-5
We should seek to overcome when we are tempted, and we have a great example in Matthew 4, how Jesus Himself resisted the temptations that the devil was putting before Jesus. After Jesus had fasted for forty days in the wilderness, the devil tried to tempt Jesus, starting with the thing that someone who hadn’t eaten in 40 days would seek-food. Jesus, because He is perfect, used the best thing to combat those temptations, with the holy scriptures.
Men should seek how to instruct others and we have a perfect examples with the way that Paul, Peter, James, John, and Jude wrote to the churches. These men were filled with the Holy Spirit and their writings teach us our faith. We can use these teachings to help others build up their faith and strengthen them in the Lord.
We should seek how to be forgiving with others, as God commands. When someone admits their faults and comes forward asking to be forgiven, we need to be forgiving with them, as Jesus has done for us. Jesus died for the sins of the entire world, and offers that forgiveness to everyone when they ask for it, and it is our duty as Christians to do the same to others.
“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” Ephesians 4:32
There is never a point where we should stop seeking to improve any part of our spiritual life. Each day is another day to become stronger and better than we were the day before. Like my dog who continually seeks to play and chase after sticks, we need to continually seek to improve all aspects of our faith. Keep on seeking.
In Christ,
Andrew
