The Sandbox

Goodmorning and welcome in today. Today we’re going to take a look at a passage of scripture from Ephesians chapter 3 but before we do that I wanted to tell you a story.

When I was a kid, I was playing at the neighbors one summer afternoon. They were in the process of digging a basement. A few of us kids were watching all the heavy equipment at work while playing with our construction toys in the sandbox.  I started digging in the sandbox with my bulldozer toy when I hit a rock. It was a cool looking rock and I wanted to take it out and bring it home. I asked the other kids to come help.  That afternoon was a process of digging with our hands until our fingers got sore. We found some toy shovels and scoops to move the dirt, but the deeper we dug, the bigger it became.  The next day we came back and kept digging and digging and digging around that rock only to reveal to us how big it really was.  By then we were in a fairly good-sized hole and we never even got to the bottom. We were all stunned at how big it really was the deeper we had dug.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

When we go into the Holy scriptures each day, we can begin to comprehend with our hearts just how big God’s love truly is. It continues to grow bigger and bigger as we develop in our Christian faith.  I really feel that the greatest thing that any of us could ever discover is knowing and understanding how much God cares for us. The best thing for us to do is to keep on digging each and every day, and watch how big it gets.

Eph 3:17-19 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;  And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

Understanding the greatness of God’s love towards this sinful world is like a pearl of great price to me. It’s greater than anything I could ever possess, or any Earthy treasure that I could ever attain. In the love of God is found riches beyond our dreams and incomparable fortunes. The icredible thing is that the deeper that you dig, the bigger it becomes.

Matt 13:44-46 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.  Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:  Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

The Apostle wants us to be filled with faith and rooted and grounded in love. When something is rooted it means to be established deeply and firmly.

Many years ago when we moved out into the woods there was a huge popple tree that was approximately 40 inches in diameter that stood about a stone’s throw away from the house. We nicknamed it Big Ben, and over many years, that huge well rooted tree withstood all the thunderstorms, wind storms and snowstorms that came to pass. It was unmovable. This is the way God wants us to be, completely and utterly tapped into his love. Just like a tree, we need to soak in nourishment from His love, knowing how much He cares for each of us.

Col 2:6-7 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:  Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

The Apostle wants us to understand how big God’s love for us truly is. Comprehend is to understand the nature or meaning of; or grasp with the mind and perceive:

Our family likes to do a lot of fishing up here in Minnesota but most of the lakes that we go to around our town are fairly small.  When I was younger, I went on a trip for the first time to see Lake Superior, which is one of the great lakes by Duluth. When we came over a hill, my jaw dropped when I saw the sheer size of the lake. I had heard stories from others about it but couldn’t comprehend it in my mind until the day I saw it. I was completely mesmerized and amazed at how large it really was.

God wants each of us to comprehend in our minds the vastness of His love for us, and the depths that Jesus went to on the cross to save us.

1 John 4:9-14 – In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

How many people drink bottled water? We drank bottled water for many years, but not the kind you buy from the store, we bottled our own. We have a free 200 foot well not far from where we live, where we used to fill up with 120 gallons of drinking water in my pickup. When the bottles were filled up completely, we were set for months on end.

This well is called the Flowing well, and like its name, it constantly flows, God wants our hearts completely filled to the rim with a constant unending flow of the knowledge of His great love for us. He wants us to learn to love others, as He loves us.  The Apostle John sums up his comprehension of the love of Christ.

1 John 4:16 – And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

We are all sinners, but praise God for His blessed Son, who died to redeem and forgive us of our sins. It’s incredible that a perfect righteous God would die for our sinfulness. That truly is the greatest love that I have ever known. It’s bigger than you can imagine!

I think about that, when I think about……

….. The Sandbox.

That’s where I’m going to stop for right now, but Lord willing I’ll talk to you some more tomorrow. Till then, bye-bye everybody.♥️
