Faith is trust, belief, or confidence in the intentions or abilities of someone or something.
If someone has faith in another person to watch over their home while they are away on vacation, it means that they believe in the other person to take care and maintain everything. Mow the lawn, take care of any animals, etc.
And obviously the opposite of faith would be to not have trust or confidence, or unbelief in the abilities of someone or something.
So to get right into our study today, when someone has faith in Jesus and His ability to heal their sickness, it means that they have complete confidence that He can and will heal them. There will be no doubt or uncertainty, but total faith.
In Matthew 9, we read about two blind men who believed in Jesus, and asked Him to heal them.
“And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us.
And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.
Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.” Matthew 9:27-29
Because of their faith, they were healed.
In another passage of scripture, a man was brought to Jesus who was sick with the palsy, which is a disease that causes muscle paralysis. Because there were a great amount of people in the house where Jesus was, the men who carried the sick person couldn’t get him to Jesus. But do you know what they did? They opened up the roof of the house, and let down the sick before Jesus. “When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.” Mark 2:5
In Mark 5, we actually have two instances to help show the power of faith to be healed. A ruler of a synagogue came to Jesus, asking Him to come and heal his daughter back at his home. While on their way there, a multitude of people followed Jesus, and in that crowd of people was a woman who had been dealing with a sickness for 12 years. She went to many physicians over that time, trying to be healed. She spent everything that she had, yet she wasn’t any better, but in fact became worse. So when she heard that Jesus was passing by, she went up to Him in the crowd, believing that if she just touched His clothes that she would be healed. And do you know what happened? She was healed. Jesus told her “thy faith hath made thee whole.”
Right after this woman was healed, one of the rulers’ servants came to him and told him that his daughter was dead, and not to trouble Jesus any further. But what did the Lord tell the ruler? “Be not afraid, only believe.” The man believed, and his daughter was healed.
In James 5, we are taught that if someone is sick that they should ask to be prayed over and anointed with oil.
“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.” James 5:14-15
“The prayer of faith shall save the sick.” That is a promise. You just need to have faith.
“Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” Mark 9:23
