Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today we’re going to take a look at a passage of scripture but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
Many years ago when I was in high school I took an astronomy class. I enjoyed the class so much that I got straight “A” the entire year. I really enjoyed going to the Planetarium and getting a close-up view of the sun through a powerful telescope with filters. I think one of my favorite things was looking up into the latenight sky at all the constellations, stars, and the aurora borealis, which is known as the Northern Lights, for those of us who reside in northern Minnesota. One day the teacher told us that there was a large meteor shower that was expected to be in our area that we could watch that evening. Since I lived on a lake and it was the middle of winter I took a chair and sat down on the ice in the middle of our bay with some hot chocolate to keep warm. I had the best seat in the house. I’ve been to a lot of fireworks displays but this was the best because it was a display of God’s handiwork. I watched as what seemed to be thousands of meteors as they streaked across the sky in a brilliant light at 3000 degrees Fahrenheit. Eventually there was nothing left, momentarily serving their purpose and then completely burning up into nothingness in the Earths atmosphere.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Someday the Earth and everything in it will be burned up. Just like those meteors, nothing will remain.
2 Peter 3:10-12 – But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
There are many people who really believe that this planet is going to be here forever, but the truth is, it’s only temporary housing. The bible teaches that there is going to be a new Earth. It’s even going to have completely different physical features. The one that we currently reside on will eventually be completely destroyed.
Rev 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
In the dictionary, the word “new” is defined as something that has never been seen before.
Isaiah 66:22 – For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.
Just as I waited patiently on the ice that night, we wait patiently to see the new places that God has created for us.
2 Peter 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
I have a feeling that the new place that God is creating is going to be so amazingly incredible that the current place we reside on will be easily forgotten.
Isaiah 65:17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
When a person ages and grows old over the years and dies, they refer to it as passing away. That is eventually what’s going to happen to this planet.
Matthew 24:35 – Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
Again the Lord teaches that the Earth is going to pass away.
Matt 5:18 – For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Isaiah 51:6 – Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.
Just as your clothing decays and gets old and unusable overtime, such will happen to this place.
Psalms 102:25-26 – Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:
This verse is repeated by the Apostle in the New Testament.
Hebrews 1:10-12 – And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.
Have you ever taken a sugar cube and dropped it in a cup filled with water? Eventually it completely dissolves and nothing is left at all.
Isaiah 34:4 – And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree.
The current Earth that we dwell on is being kept by God, until the time that he sees fit to take us from here.
2 Peter 3:7 – But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
I like to watch celestial events, but the truth is, that none of us have seen seen anything yet! Someday the Earth and everything in it is going to be burned up, just like…
