“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.” John 14:16-20
What are some things that you used to want as child to make you feel safe, or comforted?
Many children have a certain fear of the dark, that a monster or creature will come out for them while they sleep in their rooms at night. To remedy this, many parents will get a “night light” for their child’s room, a small light that provides enough illumination to set the young child at ease. It is a comforting feeling to them to have that little light on.
A man who is about to depart overseas in the military may have a young family, and he may give his children something special for them to remember him by, until he returns. Something that will comfort them, something that will always remind them of his love for them and give them some comfort to ease that time of separation.
Two thousand years ago, Jesus left this Earth to go to be back with His Father in Heaven. But before He left, He left us a promise, that He would return once again.
“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” John 14:1-3
We are waiting earnestly for the return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Like the children waiting for their dad to come home from a war, we have been left something to comfort us until Christ’s return. The Holy Spirit. We have been given a small piece of Heaven to have inside our hearts to help us, guide us, and comfort us until that special day.
“And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.” Romans 8:23
This world is a dark and lonely place, filled with many evils. Without a light to guide us, it is impossible for us to find our way to eternal salvation. Thankfully, we have been left the Holy Spirit to help us through, lighting up our path and giving us comfort as we walk each day.
Like the parable of the virgins in Matthew 25, our lamps need to be filled to the top with the oil of the Holy Spirit. Just as the night light brings comfort to a child, we have our own personal light in the Holy Spirit.
Each day is one day closer to His return. Don’t worry, Jesus is coming soon!
In Christ,
Andrew
