Good morning and welcome in. Today I want to take a look at a passage of scripture from the book of Matthew but before we do that, I wanted to ask you a question.
What was your age the first time that you began to learn in school?
Many of us begin our schooling when we are very young. We learn how to read and write and as we grow older we begin to read textbooks and study the history of the human race. As we sit in a class we listen to an instructor who is there to answer questions and to give us knowledge of things that we didn’t really know before. What they do as a teacher is pass on the information that they have learned and give it to you. It’s very similar to the Christian faith that has been handed down by the apostles and disciples of the Lord for thousands of years.
Preach means publicly proclaim or teach a religious message or belief, or to earnestly advocate a belief or course of action. It means to expound, explain, and make known.
Jesus called men to follow Him, and to preach, just as He preached.
Matt 4:18-20 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
When you go off to school, a guidance counselor might try to point you in a direction in your life where there is a great need in society for workers. They may advise you to get involved with computers or another career where there is a great opportunity for employment. I believe the greatest need is to have more men preaching God’s Word, and it’s truly a vocation where the laborers are few.
Matt 9:35-38 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth laborers into his harvest.
Can you imagine being a farmer who’s got a very large harvest that needs to be brought in but there are not enough people to help? Or sometimes a person shows up to work for a while but eventually quits and then goes home.
Luke 9:59-62 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
It’s interesting that the greatest need in society today is the profession in which the workers are few and far between. I really don’t believe that there is anything greater that a man can do with his life than to help others learn about Christ and His forgiveness. You don’t have to be a professionally trained speaker, because the Lord used a group of simple fishermen. You don’t need to be a gifted writer or communicator, just possess a willing heart.
1 Corinthians 2:1-8 – And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.
Life is so short on this Earth, like a wisp of smoke, but God is a never-ending flame. The things that we seek after in this world are temporary, but God is eternal. When you preach Jesus, souls can be won unto everlasting life. While fruit eventually decays here on the Earth, the fruit that His laborers pick will last forever.
John 4:35-36 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
Can you imagine going to a college course to learn a subject, but there was no teacher at the front of the classroom? Can you envision going to the local Vo-Tech to be trained how to become a mechanic but there was no instructor? Somebody needs to preach the gospel so that people have the opportunity to believe the truth in Christ.
Rom 10:14-17 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
In order for people to place their faith and trust in Jesus, somebody needs to preach the gospel to them, which is exactly what the Apostle Paul did with his life.
1 For 15:1-11 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.
For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.
No matter which way people in this world may try to direct the path of your life, please remember that there is a vocation where the laborers are few. It’s a job where the benefits are forever and eternal. It’s the most important job that one could ever have. We just need to listen to the Lord Jesus from our hearts, because He truly is….
…..our Guidance Counselor.
Let’s think about those things for right now and Lord willing, we will talk some more tomorrow. Till then, bye-bye everybody.❤️
