Titus 2:7 “In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity.”
Do you have a specific order to the way that you start your day? Maybe you wake up, make some coffee, go take a shower, and go off to work. This is the exact same way that you start each weekday, and you could say that it is a pattern.
A pattern is defined as a particular sequence of events, facts etc. which can be understood, used to predict the future. Meaning, that if you have a sequence of numbers that goes 1,2,3,1,2… what comes next? 3. We know this because it is a repeating pattern.
Each day is a cycle or a pattern that follows the same order each day. The sun rises over the horizon up into the sky, and then it slowly lowers back down again. The seasons are a pattern as well. You have spring, summer, autumn, and winter every year without fail. These things have all repeated since the beginning of creation.
I guess a habit is similar to a pattern as well. When someone has a habit of doing something, they do it on a regular basis. People can have many different habits, but a very good habit to have is the regular study of God’s word. It is a very good thing to have our minds refreshed each day as we read through the Bible, and Paul wrote this to Timothy in one his letters to him.
1 Timothy 4:12-16 “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.”
“Give attendance to reading.” Each day when I was in school, right at the beginning of each day the teacher would take an “attendance report” to note who had shown up for school that day. Every day this report would take place, and this is how we should be when it comes to reading the Bible. Daily reading is a vital task so that we can continually stay strong and wise in God’s word.
Prayer is another good habit, or pattern, that we as Christians need to have. Spending time talking to God in your prayers is our direct method of communication to the Heavenly Father, to be used as often as we can or need. Through prayer, we have the ability to ask Him for help and direction any time that we need it. We do not always understand and have the answer to everything, but God does, and prayer is our direct line to Him.
Through prayer, we can show the Lord each day our love for Him through praise. A grateful heart is a quality that we all need, and through prayer we can convey our messages of appreciation for everything that He has done.
There are no limits to the amount of good things that you can do each day. I like to think of it like when I go for a long walk until my legs become very tired, but I continue to take one more step, one after the other until I finally reach my destination. The word of God is not bound or restricted to a certain amount of time. When Paul was imprisoned, he didn’t stop praising God. He didn’t give up doing good works. He may have been physically restricted to an area, but he still continued to write his letters to the churches and inspire others to keep strong in their faith.
A pattern of good works is something that does not have an end or have a limit. The only limitation is yourself.
In Christ,
Andrew
