Some people have excellent self motivation and are able to keep themselves busy without anyone needing to have to tell them, but others may need some direction and help finding something to do.
Do you remember the parable in Matthew 20? Well in this passage Jesus told a parable about a householder who went out to find labourers to work in his vineyard. After he had found some he directed them to go work in the vineyard, for the wages of a penny a day. A few hours later this man was going through the marketplace and found some more labourers, idle and waiting, so he hired them and sent them to his vineyard. Later he had gone out and, finding more, likewise set them to work. At the eleventh hour, with just one hour left to work in the day, he found still more labourers. The man asked them, Why are you standing here idle? To which they answered, Because no man has hired us. And just as with all the rest, he sent them to work in his vineyard.
This man gave the laborers a job, and a purpose. He gave them a direction to their day by sending them off to work, instructing them to go and work in his vineyard. Well just like that man, Jesus gives us a direction to follow. He gives us an example and shows us how we need to be living our lives.
John 15:16 “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit…”
Without a drive, focus, and dedication a business will fail. If the workers in your nearest retail store just sat in chairs and watched you walk by, there would be nothing that got done. The shelves would remain empty, and they wouldn’t make any money.
Without direction and instruction, a child can fall into many dangerous and harmful situations. Look at how many fires are started because a child is left unsupervised. They become bored and restless, and instead of applying themselves to something good, they fall into mischief. Have you ever heard the saying, Idle hands are the devil’s workshop? Really, you can say that an idea life is the devil’s workshop as well. Without Christ’s guidance and direction in our lives, we can fall into sin, which is exactly why we need to spend some time each day praying and studying God’s word.
To each believer Jesus has given their own set of gifts and instructed us how to use them. Not to leave them sit, dormant, but to use them for His purpose, for His work. Our gifts and purpose for Christ may vary slightly depending on the Lord’s plan, but we need to follow the path that He has set before each of us.
Psalms 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Crack open your Bible and you will soon find instruction for your life. Men, women, and children, we each have our place and our purpose. We each have our calling which we must do for Christ. So don’t sit around and do nothing; it’s time to do the Master’s bidding.
In Christ,
Andrew
