Knowing Jesus

Goodmorning and welcome in everyone.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from 1 John.

1 John 2:3-5  And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.  He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.  But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

Many people today claim Christianity as their faith, professing to know Jesus.  But the Apostle John teaches the proof of knowing the Lord, it’s by keeping His commandments.  A commandment is something that must be obeyed.  Many people simply think of the Ten commandments from the Old Testament, but there are numerous commands by the Lord to be followed in the New Testament.  There are doctrines and teachings of the Christian Church that were handed down and taught by the original disciples.  We prove our love towards Jesus by our obedient lives towards Him.

John 14:15  If ye love me, keep my commandments.

We can show somebody who has authority over us that we love them, by obeying them.  As a parent, doesn’t it please you when a child obeys you?   A child shows love towards their dad by listening and doing what he commands.  A wife shows love towards her husband by obeying him in everything.  These places of authority have been created by God and for his purposes.  We show our love for Christ, by becoming obedient children, and doing His will.  The greatest commandment is to love God, and we do this through our obedient lives towards Him.

Matthew 22:37-38  Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.  This is the first and great commandment.

Jesus always does the perfect will of God as an example of how we are supposed to live.  He always pleases the heavenly Father perfectly.

Matthew 3:17  And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

To abide in Christ’s love, we must keep His commandments.

John 15:10  If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

We need to become born again through faithful obedience to the Word of God.  To abide in Scripture means to conform and obey the rules, accepting them without objection.

1 Peter 1:23. Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

Those who rebelliously refuse to conform to the doctrine of Christ, don’t have God.

2 John 1:9. Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

Again I asked you parents, if your children choose to disobey you, do you jump up and down with joy? Of course not.  It makes you upset.  So we learn that when we serve and obey those in authority in our own household, it shows that you love them.  In order to show God how much we love Him, we need to obey Him too, and keep His Word.

John 14:21  He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

God loved the world by sending Jesus to save us, but in order to enter into eternal life, we need to prove our love towards Him, by humbly submitting to His will.  An Earthly marriage is very symbolic to the relationship between the church and Jesus Christ.  As the church is subject to Jesus, wives need to submit and obey their husbands in everything, because if obedience doesn’t happen, love does not exist; not for her husband, and certainly not for the Lord Jesus.  To remain in Christ’s love, we need to do His will.

John 14:23-24  Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.  He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

When people refuse to lovingly serve and obey Jesus, they will end up being cursed.

1 Corinthians 16:22. If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.

When someone claims to be a follower of Jesus, it means to obey the things He teaches.  Disobedience doesn’t please anybody who is in a place of authority.  God’s Word is capable of saving our souls, only if we become doers of it.  God blesses those who possess an obedient heart.

James 1:21-25  Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.  But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.  For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:  For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.  But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

We perfect our love towards God by keeping His Word.  His commandments are certainly not painful to obey.

1 John 5:3  For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

A commandment is an authoritative order to do, or not to do something. As I’ve said numerous times, when I was young, people told me that I couldn’t get to heaven by keeping commandments. But scripturally, if you won’t keep His commandments, you’re a liar.  If you refuse to do so, you will miss out on Paradise.  It’s more than professing to be a Christian. It’s more than sitting in a church service somewhere. It is about doing the will of God from the heart.

1 Peter 1:13-14  Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;  As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

Remember that obedience and faithfulness to God’s Word, shows God how much you truly love him.  God grants us a precious gift of Grace so that we can transform from a sinner, into a saint.  This change is required in order to enter into eternal life.  Heaven is going to be a perfect sinless place, this is why we need to put off sins of the flesh right now, and prepare ourselves for the world that’s coming.  Jesus died on the cross to take our sins away, and we can return His great love by living each day for him in perfect obedience.

John 15:14  Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

Keeping his commands is the proof of…….

…….Knowing Jesus

Let’s think about these things for right now, and Lord willing, we will talk with you some more tomorrow.  Till then, bye bye everybody. ❤️
