What Is Blasphemy?

Mark 3:28-29  Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:

But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:

Today, we see going to study about what blasphemy is. Jumping right into it, blasphemy is defined in the dictionary as irreverence toward something considered sacred or inviolable; the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence towards God.

While clearly not anywhere near on the same level as blasphemy towards God, there are certain “unspoken” laws in the United States that people are supposed to follow. One such example is that during the National Anthem generally people are asked to rise and remove any kind of hat that they are wearing, in a show of reverence, respect, and honor. To refuse to do so, if asked, is often viewed as disrespectful, irreverent act. Like I said, it is no where near and cannot compare towards blasphemy towards God, because it is a flag, and not the Lord of all things, but you see what I mean.

In the book of Mark, chapter 3, some of the Jewish scribes attributed, or credited the works that Christ did to the devil, which is a blasphemous statement.

Mark 3:22-30  “And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.

And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?

And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.

And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.

And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.

No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.

Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:

But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:

Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.”

Jesus had been casting devils out of people, yet there scribes, instead of giving praise to God, said that Jesus was filled with the spirit of the devil! That is just crazy to even think about, to think that such an incredible thing had been done right before them, yet they said such a blasphemous things about Christ.

To take something that is good and holy and to call it evil– that is what blasphemy is. If someone is doing what God’s will is for them, by believing completely in His word and living their lives for Him in a just and holy manner–to call that person sick or evil, or to say that they are “of the devil”– that is completely irreverent towards Christ. Here someone is trying to honor Christ through their life and someone calls it evil. That is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

This is an area to which you do not want to ever go to. To blaspheme against the Holy Ghost is to bring eternal damnation upon yourself, and you will put yourself in a place where you cannot receive forgiveness. It is this (blaspheming the Holy Ghost) and refusing to forgive another that are the two things where I have found that there is no forgiveness for. Please, never put yourself in that position.

In Christ,

Andrew
