Goodmorning and welcome in everyone. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to ask you something.
Would you find fault with somebody because they didn’t wear matching socks? Would you find fault with somebody because they didn’t vacuum their living room everyday? Would you find fault with somebody because they didn’t wash their hands before they ate supper? Would you find fault with somebody, because they didn’t spend time cleaning house this week?
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
The afore mentioned items have nothing to do with the inner character of someone’s heart. Many people thrive on finding any kind of tidbit of information about someone, simply to find fault with them. These activities are lead by the sinful nature. Within the church, the brothers needed to be capable of exhorting and rebuking each other in time of need. These things needed to to be done out of love for others, motivated by a desire to see them repent and believe the truth. Corrections using doctrinal truth is commanded in scripture, but fault finding is something completely different. A faultfinder is a person who criticizes someone or something in a petty manner. It’s completely unfair, unreasonable, and uncalled for. A faultfinder doesn’t want to help others, they want to hurt them. Faultfinders focus on digging up dirt on others, based on things that are completely unimportant and not even worth giving attention to. A lot of people would consider their actions as childish and irrelevant.
Think about a very kind and pleasant girl from school. She’s always nice, but everybody hates her and tries to purposely find something wrong with her life. She is hated because of her goodness, and others just want to bring her down in the mud with them. So what a faultfinder will do, is purposely make the attempt to find minor imperfections or errors, that are completely unimportant, in an attempt to impune their reputation. This is nothing new, because the devil has been doing it for thousands of years. The Lord Jesus who created everything, was treated in the same manner. They were constantly trying to find fault with him, because they hated Him and were jealous of His abilities. The pharisees were so focused on finding petty external things wrong with the Lord, that they were blinded by their own religious hypocrisy. On the inside of their hearts, it was they, who were filled with wickedness and disobedience.
Luke 11:37-40, 53-54 And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat. And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner. And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also? And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things: Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.
The Pharisees only wanted to hear Jesus say something, so they could accuse Him, and deliver Him to the authorities. This kind of activity is very malicious and motivated by hatred. They wanted to find fault with Him so much, that they sent out spies to infiltrate the groups that He was preaching to.
Luke 20:19-26 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them. And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.
And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly: Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no? But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me? Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar’s. And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar’s, and unto God the things which be God’s. And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.
They found fault with both John the Baptist and Jesus, over food and drink. They even referred to our precious Lord Jesus as a drunk.
Matthew 11:18-19 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
Some people feel that if they find fault with you, that they will be elevated in the eyes of others. The religious leaders were very worried about the fame of Christ, and wanted to do anything they could to bring him down. They wanted to prevent His popularity from continuing.
John 7:45-48 Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? The officers answered, Never man spake like this man. Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived? Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?
Remember that rebukes and correction from God’s Word is required in the church, but faultfinding is maliciously trying to bring somebody else down in the eyes of others. They found fault with Jesus for healing a woman on the Sabbath.
Luke 13:10-17 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.
And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.
And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.
The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day? And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.
Faultfinders are on their own little mission, to try to find some kind of fault with you so as to bring you down in the eyes of others. I really hope that they find something better to do with their time, because I’m sure that for a lot of us, its been a week since any of us were involved…..
… Cleaning House.
Let’s think about these things for today, and Lord willing, we will talk with you some more tomorrow. Till then, bye bye everybody. ❤️
