The Continental Divide

Good morning and welcome in everybody.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Where I grew up, there was a huge continental divide that we used to drive over each day when we came home after school.  It was a huge rock divide that never changed from year to year.  When I was in elementary school, it was there.  When I was in middle school, it was there.  When I graduated and left home it was there.  Unlike the changing of the seasons, or the shifting sands of the desert, it is a permanent and unmovable fixture on the Northern Minnesota skyline.

This reminds me of the Christian life.

God’s Word is a rock that cannot be moved.  It doesn’t change like a chameleon.  It doesn’t change like the weather. It is constant, it is permanent, and it is forever.

Matthew 24:35  Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

Over the years, many people have tried to alter and change the teachings of God’s Word, but it only results in futility.  God’s Word is not something that adapts to society, society must adapt to God’s Word.  God is unchangeable, and so are His doctrines.

Hebrews 13:8  Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Many people find it easier to alter scripture than to alter their own lifestyle.  Nowadays, if they don’t want to obey certain parts of scripture, they simply publish a perverted Bible that says what they want to hear rather than what they need to hear.  A student might attempt to change his grades on his report card, but it doesn’t change the fact that he flunked.  Instead of owning up to his own faults, he tries to deceitfully change it, akin to people today who won’t admit the biblical error of their own sinfulness. Many people find it easier to try to change God, than to change themselves. They find it easier to live in sin rather than converting to the way of Truth.  The reason why is because of prideful impenitence.  They prove by their actions that they love their sins more than Jesus.

John 14:21, 23-24  He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.  Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.  He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

Love for God is the motivating factor of change, leading us to forsake the world and it’s sinfulness.  Love for God is recognizing that He shed His own blood on the cross, suffering the way that He did, so that we could have the opportunity through His grace, to repent and become new and obedient children, prepared for His soon approaching kingdom. Those who rebelliously refuse to lovingly undergo that conversion, are only proving themselves worthy of damnation.

When we look up into the sky, the sun is always there.  Each and every day it shines upon this Earth. It doesn’t matter if clouds or fog obscure it.  It doesn’t matter if there’s a shower or a snowstorm, the sun is always there, and it is a constant thing. No matter how obscured by the Earth’s atmosphere it might become, it is always shining.  You cannot change that fact, and you cannot change God’s Holy Word.

1 Peter 1:25 – But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

Those who hear the preaching and teaching of scripture must wholeheartedly accept it, because those who reject the everlasting Word of truth, will only find themselves judged by it at the judgment.

John 12:46-48  I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.  He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

This is why it is so important to hear God’s Word with an obedient heart.  When you do God’s will, it shows that you heard it.  When you do what a parent tells you to do, it shows that you were listening.  God gives us commands and teachings in the scriptures that we need to obey.  If you hear them, you will do them, which will result in eventually obtaining eternal life someday.

John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

There will be some people who will resist, and will not last in the true Christian faith.  Their love for the written Word never fully developed, causing them to abandon truth for a lie.  Not only that, but they surround themselves with false teachers who tell them exactly what their carnal nature wants to hear.  They preach lies, trying to  convince people that repentance and change is not required.  The Apostle prophesied about these people.

2 Timothy 4:3-4  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;  And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Eternal life is granted to those who overcome sin.

James 1:12  Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

When everything else in this world perishes and fades away, God’s Word shall remain.

Isaiah 40:8 – The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

Mark 13:31 – Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

Gods Word is unchangeable and abides forever.

1 Peter 1:23-25  Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.  For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:  But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

God’s Word is a rock that cannot be moved. A foundation of truth that all the lies of the world will never be able to budge. They are everlasting, and they are life. This is something that I am reminded of, each time when I think back to those numerous trips, over……
