Who Are You Listening To?

Where do you go to learn about something? You usually head to the source of that information, right? To learn mathematics one generally goes to a math book. To learn how to plant a field of corn you go to a farmer, not a lawyer or a dentist. You go to the source of that knowledge and information.

So if you were presented with a situation where you had to make a decision on something, but you didn’t know the answer to, who would you listen to? If you had to stop the bleeding of a wound on a person and the only two people whose phone number you could remember were a doctor and a gas station attendant, whose advice would you listen to and follow? The doctor’s. Why? Because it is the doctor who went to medical school to learn about that very thing, and knows what to do in that situation.

And that is going to lead me to the next question that I have for you today: Where should we go to learn and obtain information on how to live our lives? Whose advice and instruction should we be looking to? Some people may say that they looked at their parents for life advice and inspiration. Some may follow the advice of “self-help teachers” or psychiatrists, even close friends, in the effort to make their life decisions. They try to model their lives to be in accordance with the general public around them, and what the world teaches.

But what an individual needs to understand is that the decisions in the life of a Christian are not based on what the world teaches, but on the word of God. As the Creator of life and all things, God is the source of all knowledge, and the highest place of authority in a Christian’s life. In that place of authority, God has laid out His commands for His believers and has shown them how they need to live and act.

As Christians, we do not base our decisions and live our lives based on what the world deems to be right or wrong, we base our life on the Holy Scriptures. We make our decisions on what we have learned from Christ, regardless of what the rest of the world thinks is right.

Psalms 1:1-6  “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.”

The world will teach things such as “homosexuality is a perfectly normal thing, and there is nothing wrong with it,” while the Bible teaches that it is a sin. The Bible teaches that homosexuality is immoral. The world believes that the universe was created in a dust and gas explosion in outer space. This is being taught in public schools today to children every year, but the Bible teaches differently, and as Christians we believe the words of God over the teaching of the world.

We cannot allow ourselves to forget Who it is that we need to be obedient to and model our lives after. It is Jesus. Not the world. The world may hate you for the stand that you take in your faith in Christ, but it doesn’t matter. It only matters that you are obedient to God’s holy word.

So who are you going to listen to and learn from? The world or God?

In Christ
