Don’t Worry About Tomorrow

When children are little, something that they are often asked in school is what do they want to be when they grow up. Some might answer that they want to be a doctor, or a race car driver, or a millionaire of some kind. They may want to have a giant house with an expensive car and an entire host of other things.

Upon reaching adulthood sometimes those dreams may have changed a bit, or maybe grown even larger, and they begin the process of working at a job to start to acquire those things. But while it is easy as a child to say that you are going to do these things, the actual acquisition may take far longer than anticipated. It might take years, or decades of straight, solid work before one could even begin to realize the fruit of their labor.

But all of that time spent in trying to gain those things is just time that could have been used in other ways, time that could have been used to acquire something that will last far longer than a car, a house, or everything that you could put inside will last. And yes, I am talking about using that time to store up treasures in Heaven.

Matthew 6:25-34  Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

There is absolutely no point in looking that far into the future and trying to gain an abundance of treasures and possessions, when they will all be left behind after our death. When you look at the life of our Lord while He was here, He and His disciples were constantly moving around from city to city. You wouldn’t find them filled with worry and thinking about where they would find food or clothes the next day. They took each day at a time and dealt with those things as they needed them.

People can get too concerned with the things of the world that it can pull their focus and attention off of the Lord and His Word. They will be too focused on getting this and that, getting a big house and a room full of clothes, a garage full of cars and toys, while they could just be content and thankful for what they have been given and have right then. Jesus had used the example of the birds, how they do not spend all their time planting and reaping, and storing up food, or worry about where they will get clothes to wear, yet they still had all that they needed because God had taken care of all their needs.

Colossians 3:1-2  If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

Take each day at a time, and place your trust in the Lord to provide you with your needs. Don’t worry about tomorrow, but place your trust in Jesus that He will take care of you, and let Him do the rest.

In Christ
