Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
When we are born into this world, we begin at a very young age learning how to speak. Most often, we pick up things from our parents as we grow up in such close daily proximity to them in the home. We begin to learn a word here, and then a phrase there, piecing them together in order to form short sentences. As we grow into adulthood, speaking the words that we have learned from childhood becomes second nature to us. They flow from the lips effortlessly, without even needing to think about them. Someday, you might decide to learn a second language, but the one that you were raised in always seems to be the most natural to speak.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
What kind of speech do you pick up from others? The devil speaks fluently in the language of lies, and deals in the dialogue of duplicity. Dishonesty is his native language, and deceit is his mother tongue.
John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
The devil is a deceiver who intentionally causes somebody to believe things that are not true. This has been going on ever since the garden of Eden when he deceived Eve. Like a modern day con-man, a liar will trick somebody by gaining their trust, and then persuading them to believe a lie. Scriptures are clear that those who willfully participate in this kind of behavior will be punished by God.
Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
Many times people will lie in order to gain some kind of personal advantage in a situation. A young adult might lie about their grades in school in order to use the car on the weekend. An employee might lie on their time card because they want to get a bigger paycheck. Some adults will even beguile children and lead them astray, causing them to hold a wrong opinion or impression about someone or something. They can also cause them to offend (sin) by convincing them to believe lies rather than the truth.
Mark 9:42 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.
A lie is the attempt to mislead you from what is true, producing a false narrative. Liars will reap their own reward, being shut out of paradise forever.
Revelation 21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
Revelation 22:15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
The evil works of hypocritical liars will be exposed by God.
Luke 12:1-2 Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.
God took the lives of those who openly lied to the Apostle Peter about certain events.
Acts 5:1-11 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet. But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him. And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband. And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.
Before the return of the Lord Jesus, the number of deceivers and liars will be on the rise.
2 Timothy 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
But even though liars will increase, we must surround ourselves with God’s truth, never allowing ourselves to be deceived with them.
Matthew 24:4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
Ephesians 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
God’s Word is the doctrine of Truth, and those who walk contrary to its teachings are liars, who need to be avoided.
1 John 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
Romans 16:17-18 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
There will be those who begin to follow the Christian faith, but eventually depart from God’s Truth, by succumbing to the lies of the devil.
1 Timothy 4:1-2 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
The Apostle Paul walked in the truth and renounced the hidden things of dishonesty.
2 Corinthians 4:2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.
The sinful speech of a liar goes against everything that our God is,….the Truth.
Ephesians 4:21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
The devil speaks lies, a vernacular with which he is well acquainted because when he utters falsehoods, he speaketh of his own. After all, they are his common language, and deceit is his….
