What do you do when you need something from someone and you know that they have it? You ask it of them. You say, Can I please have (the thing which you desire.)
For some reason it seems like we all tend to have no problem asking for things while we are young children, because when we see something such as a candy bar in a store we immediately ask for it, but as we grow older in life and into adulthood, sometimes that urge to ask for things seems to fade away as we seem to maybe not ask as much as we used to. But it is through the asking of things which we can have the opportunity to obtain.
The Lord wants to give us the Holy Spirit so that we can have it dwelling inside of us, but we need to come to Him and ask for it. Through the act of asking we show our desire to be filled with the things of Christ, and we can know that He will hear our petitions to Him and answer our prayers.
Luke 11:9-13 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
We cannot receive the Holy Spirit any other way than through the Lord, because He is the only way. So what must we do? We need to become as we were when we were little children all those years ago, go to Jesus, and ask.
Ask, seek, and knock. This is what Jesus taught. Ask the Lord to bestow His Spirit upon you. Seek to obtain that Spirit in your prayers to Him, unafraid to continue asking, because we know that He will hear us. Whenever the opportunity, knock on that door with the faith that our Lord will open it up and let the Spirit flow upon you.
That is really what is needed. Faith. Because when we have faith in the teachings of Bible we will believe the promise of the Lord when He said in John 14:13-14 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
The only thing that will prevent you from receiving the Holy Spirit of Christ is a lack of faith and a lack of asking. It really comes down to that. “You have not because you ask not” as James wrote in James 4. So start asking. Start seeking. Start knocking. Go and ask the Lord for His Spirit, and when you do, because of your faith, you can know that He will keep His promise.
In Christ
