Following Jesus

It is just about that time of year when things start to grow and new animals are born, and one of the things that is quite common to see here in the spring in Minnesota is the sight of a proud momma duck as she crosses the road with a line of young ducklings following closely behind her. Whenever she gets up to go somewhere, those little pairs of webbed feet are directly behind her, following her every step.

1 Peter 2:21  For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

Similar to a baby duckling, we must have the same kind of desire to follow our Leader, Jesus. Jesus is the perfect example and model to which we need to copy in every which way and manner in our lives. There may be several different aspects of the Christian faith which we must learn to master, but Jesus has done it all already, and we can look to Him for guidance in all of those areas, whatever they may be.

Matthew 11:29-30  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Everything that we need to be can be found in the life of our Lord Jesus. It is as though He has left us a list of instructions to follow that tell us everything that we need to know to complete the task. From love to forgiveness and everything else between, all we need to do is walk in the steps of the Lord and follow His lead. He has taken the guesswork out of what it means to be a believer in Him, because He has already shown us all that we need to know, and simply leaves us with the task of following His commands. To do this, we must be able to deny ourselves the things which we may want to do as carnal beings in the flesh, and give ourselves fully to Him by taking up our cross and following Him.

Matthew 16:24  Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

1 John 2:6  He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

Just as Jesus has done, we need to do as well, in all things. What would Jesus do? What is Jesus’ will for my life, and what are the tasks which He asks me to complete? If we can answer these questions and if we can do them then we are doing His will, and we will be rewarded for it.

What if those little baby ducklings just went off and went wherever they pleased and did whatever they wanted instead of following their mother? They would become lost, and would likely get into some very dangerous situations, and may even die becoming the meal for some kind of predator. Jesus has left us His teachings for a reason; He wants us to read and do them so that we can be saved from the death and punishment for our sins. He loves us so greatly and does not want anyone to perish, and just asks us to follow Him.

Wouldn’t you follow a fireman out of a burning building? Wouldn’t you want to be saved? “Follow me” are the words that Jesus left us, and the real question is, are you? Are you going to follow in His steps and follow Him to salvation?

In Christ

Andrew
