Imagine you have been tasked to fill an entire warehouse with boxes, from the floor all the way to the ceiling. You are told to do as much as you can, because it is quite evident that you won’t be able to do all of them on your own, but do as good of a job as you can anyway. There is plenty of work, but not enough workers.
The world is full of people who need to hear about Jesus, but there are very few people who are spreading God’s Word for everyone to hear so they may believe.
Matthew 9:35-38 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.
But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.
Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;
Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.
Preaching the Word of God is something that not enough men are doing, but it is something that needs to be done because it deals with the salvation of souls. People need to hear about the amazing love and forgiveness of the Lord Jesus, and what He did so that they may be saved from their sins. People need to hear that there is hope for them and that the salvation that they need is found only in Jesus and nowhere else. But someone has to tell them, and Jesus calls the men of the church to preach this news to the lost.
Romans 10:13-15 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
Look at how much the Word of the Lord has been spread by the works of a couple handful of men that Jesus picked. Over time the works that they have done and the writings that they have written can now be found and assessed nearly anywhere in the world. But those writings have not reached everyone’s eyes and ears yet. There will always be someone who needs to hear about Jesus, and it is to these people that Jesus calls us to reach. Not everyone will receive God’s Word, certainly, but they need to have that opportunity presented to them.
Jesus has given each of His followers certain gifts to use in the furtherance of the gospel, and it is up to us to use those gifts for Him. So, I guess the question is, are you? The harvest is great, let’s get to it.
In Christ
Andrew
