Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from 2nd Timothy.
2 Timothy 3:8-9 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.
As we study the New Testament we find numerous commands that have been given to us by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, handed down to us by His original Apostles. Anyone who claims to be a follower of Christ is called to obedience to our faith, which requires submitting yourself to God’s will rather than your own. When somebody resists, it means to willfully refuse to comply with or to submit to a place of authority, and all places of authority have been created by Jesus and for Him.
Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
There are many places of authority in this world such as kings, magistrates, and even a dad over his own house. Sometimes people don’t like authority because it restricts their movements. Instead of doing things your way, you need to comply with what somebody else commands you to do. For example, think about a man, his wife and the children in a home. One of the first places that a lot of us learn authority is within the home setting. A man is the head of his household and has complete rule and authority over them. It doesn’t matter if he is a Christian or not. It is a position that has been granted to him by God and it is a requirement by Christ for both the wife and children to submit to him completely. He has been charged with that responsibility.
He makes the final decisions, which at times will be “no” but stubborn resistance will not take no for an answer. This is the beginning of rebellion which is forbidden by God to anyone who claims to be a Christian. Rebellion is open opposition to authority or dominance. It is a willful defiance of authority and control.
1 Samuel 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
A wife may stubbornly resist her husband or a child might refuse to submit to their dad. This kind of behavior is outside the teachings of Christ, because they are commanded to be under obedience. It’s clear in Scripture that if you truly love God you will obey him, otherwise you deceive yourself.
John 14:23-24 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.
1 John 2:4 – He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
Those who have no intention to conform to God’s will are in a state of open opposition, which will ultimately result in God’s punishment.
Romans 13:1-2 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
The Christian life is about submission to God’s will and if someone tells you otherwise, they are a liar.
Submission is the process of surrendering your will to the superior force and authority of another. It is to do what you are told. This quality is so important to possess, that without it, you will miss out on eternal life. If you fear God you will obey those who are over you in the Lord.
Ephesians 5:21-24 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
Hebrews 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
There are numerous people who profess to be disciples of Christ, claiming to know God, but refusing to accept what the Christian Life entails. As we near the return of our Lord Jesus Christ, it will get steadily worse.
2 Timothy 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
Titus 1:16 – They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
Jude 1:4
For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Apostle Paul was persecuted by people who were resisting the Word of God.
2 Timothy 4:14-15 Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works: Of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words.
When somebody openly resists the truth of scripture, their works are going to be exposed publicly. This is a fact that cannot be avoided. Activities like these will bring on great shame, not only at judgment day, but in the eyes of people of this world.
1 Timothy 5:24 Some men’s sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after.
Remember that God is Not mocked. Those who defy and renounce biblical truth will receive for the wrong that they have done.
Colossians 3:25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.
Galatians 6:7-8 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
We must prepare ourselves for eternity by humbly submitting to God, and turning away from those who are….
….. Resisting the Truth
