Psalms 119:18 Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.
When we learn something new it usually requires that we direct all of our attention towards it during that learning phase. Everything else must be shoved to the side and be done later as we acquire this new knowledge. If you have an important test the next day at school you need to know the information, so you turn off the TV, you put your phone down, and you sit and study your textbook as you carefully absorb all of the information on those pages. By the time that you have finished you should have memorized all that you need to know to pass that test.
When we study the Scriptures we should apply ourselves to learning its teachings in the same manner, meditating deeply on the words in front of us so that we may begin to fully understand the meaning of what is written.
In nearly all instances the more that you do something the better you will become at it. Likewise, the more time that you spend reading and studying the Word of God the more you will understand as the Holy Spirit reveals it to you.
1 Timothy 4:13-16 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
To meditate on something means to think deeply or focus one’s mind on something for a period of time. To study something intently.
The life of a Christian is just that; a life. It is not a single moment, not a single day, or week. It is a lifetime of learning and dedication to the Lord and how we can be pleasing to Him. You can acquire quite a bit of knowledge in a lifetime, can’t you? Well we need to apply our time to meditate upon the things that are found in the teachings of the Lord so that we may fully understand the will of the Lord for each and every one of us.
2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Just like a worker perfecting his craft, we must begin to perfect ourselves through steady study and application of the Bible in all aspects and areas of our daily lives.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
Pick a chapter, pick a passage, pick a book, and go and study it. Think on the scriptures, learn what the words mean. The Bible is a well of knowledge that we must learn so that we may be pleasing children to the Father. Open up your Bible cover, and dive right in.
In Christ
