Cutting the Strings

Psalms 19:13  Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.

Have you ever seen a puppet show? Or maybe you have just seen puppets being used, or even used one yourself? Many of us have probably at one point put a sock over our hand, glued a couple of google eyes onto it, a bit of yarn for a mouth, and made our own puppets to play with.

Some of the puppets that interest me the most are the ones that have the strings attached to different parts of the body of the puppet, with a string going to each arm and leg, making it so that the puppeteers are able to control the entire body in their performance. If the puppeteer wants the puppet to clap they turn the strings one way, and if they want it to run and jump they twist them a different way. They are in control of the puppet because they control the strings.

Some people may look like they are in control of their life, but really they are just puppets, because they allow the strings of sin to control their actions. They submit their life to the direction that their sins lead them in. But this is not how Jesus calls us to live, obviously. He wants us to put away those sins from our lives, and to come and serve Him.

Romans 6:12-18  Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

This is how we may have lived in the past, allowing ourselves to be led around “by the nose” by our sins, but not anymore. We may have let ourselves continue to do what was wrong or evil, but now that we have become Christians we must cut away those strings of sin and submit ourselves to the will of Christ.

Romans 13:14  But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

That is repentance and change. The turning from wrong to right. Paul did it. Peter did it. We must as well. The sins of our past must not control us anymore. We serve Christ. Cut away those strings that used to control you, and reattach those strings to the Lord Jesus.

In Christ
