Isaiah 43:25 I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.
Have you ever gotten home from a very difficult, stressful, unpleasant day at work and told yourself that you wish that you could just forget everything that had happened?
I’m sure that everyone has some kind of memory that they try to block from their mind. Maybe it was the death of a loved one. Maybe it was the sight of a serious accident where someone got injured, or maybe it was a time when they ruined something extremely rare or expensive that they had to replace. These kinds of things are not pleasant to sit and dwell on in our minds, are they?
It is the simple truth that we have all made mistakes and committed sins at some point in our lives, and when we become Christians it is these memories of our sins that the Lord forgets as He grants us forgiveness.
Hebrews 8:12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
The grace and mercy of the Lord is quite amazing, isn’t it? Just think of all of the sins that He has forgiven! Millions upon millions of sins Jesus has forgiven over the course of time, and He still has love and compassion for sinners. Not only does our Lord forgive us of the consequence for our sin, but He also forgets that they even happened at all, remembering them no more.
To “remember” something means to have in or be able to bring to one’s mind an awareness of (someone or something that one has seen, known, or experienced in the past).
The things that I did yesterday I mostly remember, at least the main things. But if I stop to think what I did maybe a month ago this same day in the month I couldn’t tell you what I did that day. You could offer me an entire stack of money, but I still could not tell you definitively my actions that day. This is because I have forgotten it. I don’t remember.
This is what the Lord does to the memory of our sins when we humbly confess them before Him. He completely forgets our misdeeds and does not remember them anymore. That is true forgiveness if anyone needs the definition of that. No memory of those past faults, those are all deleted, just as you might delete a photo off of your cell phone. Once it’s gone it’s gone, never to be seen again.
Micah 7:18-19 Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.
He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.
Once they’re gone, they’re gone. Jesus does not remember them anymore. No more memory of them, no more thinking of them.
Isaiah 44:22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.
Rejoice, because the Lord is full of mercy and grace! Your sins may be many, but if you have confessed them before the Lord you may have peace in the knowledge that He will remember them no more.
In Christ
