Gravitation

Good morning and welcome in everybody.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

When the kids were very young, Andrew and I mounted a heavy attachment to our ceiling. We hooked up a strong rope that extended down to about 6 inches from the floor and attached a swing that we had made from a sturdy car seat.  When the children were buckled in, we would give them a gentle push causing them to go around in circles. One of my children was especially fond of this activity and wouldn’t move from it for hours at a time, so I called it the Jonahman swing.  All the children would enjoy the gentle force of gravity as they swung around in circles.  Gravity has a certain effect on each one of us. Many adults might go to an amusement park and sit on the tilt-a-whirl to feel the gravity as it spins. We normally don’t even think about it, but it is the Earth’s gravity that keeps us on the ground.  It’s the force that holds us in place as we spin through outer space. Without gravity, you would simply float away.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

When we are surrounded by the philosophies and teachings of this world, we never want to float away from the truth. The lies of this world will only attempt to pull you away from the ground beneath you. But like gravity, it is the truth of God’s Word that can hold us firmly in place.  If we continue to walk in its teachings, it can prevent us from floating away into the darkness.

Colossians 1:23  If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

Our lives need to gravitate around God’s Word because it is what holds us in place. To be grounded in our faith is to be firmly established in scriptural teachings which helps us to discern truth from lies.  Think of a tree that was transplanted many years ago, but now it has matured and is at the point where it could never be moved. This is because its roots have grown that deep.  Huge ships will come into a harbor during heavy seas, but when they drop their anchors they are held firmly in place.

Colossians 2:6-9  As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:  Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.  Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.  For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

We need to become unmovable in the teachings of scripture, because as a whole, they are what defines our faith. It is only through the acceptance of the truth that one can repent, convert and become transformed from a sinner into a saint. Some are going to turn their ears away from the truth, letting go of their lifeline to salvation.  They will end up believing lies rather than the reality of scripture. Like being untethered on a spacewalk, they will fall away into the blackness of sin.

2 Timothy 4:2-4  Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;  And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Like the Apostles, each of us has been given a certain measure of God’s grace.  Forgiveness is a free gift from God that He paid for at the cross, but it is something that you never want to neglect. You want to pay close attention and make sure that you are walking and abiding in the truth. Grace is given for a purpose, so that we go and sin no more. Only through genuine faith can you become a doer of God’s will, and lovingly obedient to Christian doctrines.

1 Timothy 4:14-16  Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

The Apostle Paul could see the works that God was performing in the church, through their obedient hearts.

Philippians 2:12-13  Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.  For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Unlike the shifting sands in a desert, God’s Word is an unmovable rock of truth, that guides us into His perfect will. What we must do is submit, so that we can please Him in everything.  Like a guitar that allows a musician to create beautiful works upon it, we must do the same.  Through humble submission to our creator, we must allow ourselves to become instruments of His will.

Romans 6:13  Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

Colossians 1:10 – That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

1 Thessalonians 4:1 – Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.

So when we are swirled around by sinful temptations, we must remember to keep strapped in to the teachings of our faith. God’s Word can save us and hold us tightly in place, through the power of faith and His Spiritual……
