“I’m not listening, I’m not listening, I’m not listening!” Have you ever heard someone say this? Most likely it was a child, or maybe you yourself once said something like this when you were younger. You may have had someone trying to tell you something but you didn’t want to hear it, so you tried to drown out their words by covering them up with your own.
The Bible teaches that in the last days people will not endure the sound doctrine of the Scriptures, but will instead go and listen to others who will tell them exactly what they want to hear.
2 Timothy 4:1-4 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
We can see this clearly happening today, as the world steadily moves further and further away from the Word of God.
Have you ever gone to a pond or lake with a bag of bread to feed the ducks and geese on the shore? Well these birds will often have gotten quite friendly and will walk right up to you looking for a tasty treat. You can hold up a slice of bread and lead the entire flock wherever you go, because they want that bread. People can be like this as well. If they don’t like what they hear in one place they go to another, and another, until eventually they find someone who says the things that they like.
Instead of accepting the truth of the Scriptures that teaches them that they must repent of their sins, they put their fingers in their ears so to speak, and refuse to change. They do not want to hear the truth, so they go and listen to others who will fill their mind with the lies that they want to hear. They don’t want to turn away from their lifestyle of sin, so they give heed to someone who tells them that they can continue to live in their sins and do not need to change.
2 Peter 2:1-3 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
This has sadly happened to many modern “Christian” churches today. No longer are the teachings of God being taught as they were(and still are) intended to be taught. Instead of the Gospel of the Lord being taught, these “churches” have begun to mix philosophies of the world into their services, even to the point that they are completely changing the true meaning of Scripture into something that it does not mean. As a result, people will flock to their services, wanting to believe that they can broaden their lifestyle so that they can continue to live in their sins. But the Word of God cannot be broadened. It cannot be added to, taken away from, or altered in any way. The Bible teaches what it teaches, and it is those teachings that everyone who calls themselves a Christian must abide by.
Matthew 7:13-14 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
There is only one Gospel. There is only one way to Heaven, and it is a narrow way. Don’t plug your ears to the truth, let it sink in deep. Listen to the Word of the Lord and don’t let anyone lead you away from the path that leads to life. Are you listening?
In Christ
