One summer when I was about 10 or 11 years old I wanted to make a little bit of money to be able to buy some candy and treats now and then, so I decided to go out and start picking up loose aluminum cans. Can after can I would pick up, filling up large black garbage bags full. After a while I got quite a few bags filled up, and one day I took them all in to the recycling center and exchanged them all for cash. All of those single cans had added up to be a nice little pile of money for me to eventually spend. Each can may have been only worth about a penny or two, but because I spent the time to collect them those pennies began to add up, and I one day reaped the rewards.
We can do this same kind of reward collecting each day of our lives as well, if we choose, by doing simple things for others in the name of a disciple, even something as simple as giving a cup of water to someone.
Matthew 10:42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.
It doesn’t have to be something so incredibly massive or expensive. Many people may think that giving a glass of cold water to someone is a rather pointless, insignificant gift, but if it is done while giving the credit to a disciple of the Lord, Jesus taught that that person will not lose their reward. And that really is what we want, to store up our rewards in Heaven. One by one, just like picking up cans and putting them into a bag to cash in at a later date, we can start storing up our rewards in Heaven, and hopefully by the time that we go to be with the Lord we will have a large collection ready and waiting to be cashed in.
Colossians 3:23-24 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
Sure, anyone can give something as simple as a bottle of water to someone else, but isn’t it greater to get a reward for doing it as well? What if you were offered 5 dollars for each water that you gave another person; wouldn’t you do it? Well instead of collecting your rewards right now here on the Earth for the things that you do for others, why don’t you save them up for later? It sure will be a far greater reward for you in Heaven than it will be here on Earth.
Galatians 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
Don’t get tired of doing things in the name of the Lord, or giving in the name of a disciple, but instead keep going! Keep storing up those rewards in Heaven, until the day that you cash them all in.
In Christ
