Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
During a battle with some British ships, a 64 gun Spanish galleon was sunk near Columbia. It has been said that during the battle, the explosive powder that was on board the San Jose detonated, completely destroying the ship. At the same time, its cargo sank into the depths of the ocean. Some people have said that it was one of the biggest treasure ships in history, filled with gold, silver and other expensive jewelry. It’s been claimed that in modern-day currency, the ship’s cargo would be worth roughly $16 billion dollars, and as of today, is still at the bottom of the sea floor. People have been hunting for riches for many years. They’ve gone digging for gold in the mountains, panning for it in the rivers, and even gone into the oceans, in search of sunken treasure.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Of all the treasure and riches that you could ever attain on this Earth, the greatest treasure is found in the wisdom from God the Father, and His blessed Son Jesus Christ.
Colossians 2:1-3 ¹ For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; ² That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; ³ In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Solomon was a man who was seeking after wisdom that came from God. It was something that he wanted with all of his heart, and the Lord granted it to him.
2 Chronicles 1:7-12. ⁷ In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee. ⁸ And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast shewed great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead. ⁹ Now, O LORD God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude. ¹⁰ Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great? ¹¹ And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king: ¹² Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.
Wisdom is something that God wants to give each of us, and He doesn’t scold us when we come searching for it.
James 1:5. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
Proverbs 2:1-5 ¹ My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; ² So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; ³ Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; ⁴ If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; ⁵ Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
You can spend years increasing your earthly wealth. You can use up all of your time storing up for retirement, but the wisdom of God is greater than gold, and better than rubies.
Proverbs 8:10-11 ¹⁰ Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. ¹¹ For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
Proverbs 20:15. “There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.”
Moses was the meekest of all men, humble and obedient towards the Lord Jesus Christ. He turned away from all the treasures in Egypt to attain the things of God. How many people today could give away an inheritance of millions, in order to seek Christ?
Hebrews 11:24-26 ²⁴ By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; ²⁵ Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; ²⁶ Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
Only a wise man will truly seek after the things of Christ, growing daily in the wisdom of God.
Proverbs 18:15 “The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.”
Ecclesiastes 7:25 “I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:”
Timothy was instructed by the Apostle to seek God’s wisdom.
2 Timothy 3:14-17 ¹⁴ But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; ¹⁵ And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. ¹⁶ All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: ¹⁷ That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
Paul prayed for the church for wisdom.
Col 1:9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
Colossians 3:16. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
1 Corinthians 2:6-8 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
God’s Word is a chest that is filled with riches. What we must do is seek it in order to find it, and become Spiritual….
