The Bindery

Good morning and welcome to everybody.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Many years ago, before I became a believer, I got a job at a bindery that made all kinds of different books and reading materials. The first week that I was there, they put me on a huge binder machine that would glue pages together into a book. You had to move quickly as the books whizzed by at an incredible pace. After I got a little faster, they put me on a stitcher machine to make magazines that were stapled together with wire. Each morning I would punch the clock and walk out to my station, but on the way, I would momentarily stop to watch one of my co-workers as he worked alone on a big machine. Every few moments you would hear a large “thump” that was felt as it rumbled through the concrete floor. I would watch in amazement as a huge cutting blade slammed through 5 inches of paper. He quickly removed the freshly cut pages, stacked them on a pallet, and slid some fresh ones under the blade. After depressing two buttons with his left and right hands, down it came again, “thump“, cutting that huge stack of paper in half, just like a warm knife through butter.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Up until that point of my life, that was the sharpest thing that I had ever seen, but years later I found something even sharper. It was so sharp that it would put that bindery blade to shame. It is the sword of God’s Holy Word.

Hebrews 4:12  For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The Word of God is very sharp, and reaches into places then an earthly weapon will never touch, the soul. It physically hurts when a soldier gets shot in battle or cut with a knife. At times, God’s Word can sting even more as it plunges deep within the conscience, convicting a sinner of the error of their way. The sword of Truth can cause great pain in your heart, depending on how far into the world of sin that you are living. Unlike an Earthly weapon, this one strikes at the very fabric of our being, correcting and rebuking us each time we stray away from the will of God.

2 Timothy 3:16-17  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Each of us have cut ourselves one time or another, whether it’s cleaning fish or cutting potatoes. It doesn’t feel very good does it? It physically hurts. The truth of God’s Word can cause great pain inside of a person’s mind, as it exposes the true motives and the state of the heart. Like an Earthly dad who corrects you, God’s Word rebukes our souls, so we can correct our behavior, and become transformed into His obedient children.

Hebrews 12:5-11  ⁵ And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:  ⁶ For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. ⁷ If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? ⁸ But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. ⁹ Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? ¹⁰ For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. ¹¹ Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

God’s Word cuts deep into the heart, in order to correct us. God doesn’t want anybody to perish, He wants them to repent of their sins. It is through the sword of His Word, and our acceptance of the truth, that this feat is accomplished.

Revelation 2:16 “Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.”

Many times those who are rebelling against God don’t want to be rebuked. It happens because of pride and a lack of humility. They don’t want to be told that they are doing the wrong thing. They don’t want to experience the suffering that happens when you finally accept the truth. But in order to enter into eternal life, we need to open our hearts and minds to God’s Word.  We must allow ourselves to endure His discipline, as God corrects those things that are wrong, deep within our hearts. A man of God is set forth for this very purpose, to preach God’s Word, and guide God’s elect, on the path that leads to eternal life.

2 Timothy 4:2 “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.”

People have used earthly swords to fight for thousands of years, but a soldier of Christ doesn’t use man-made weapons to fight battles. He uses a weapon that has been forged by God, the everlasting sword of Holy Scripture.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5. ⁴  (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;). ⁵ Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Ephesians 6:17  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Isaiah 49:2 “And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me;”

Revelation 1:16. “And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.”

We made a lot of books when I worked on the factory floor, but none of them could ever compare with the words that are bound between the covers of the King James Bible. God’s Word of truth is a sharp sword, and if you listen closely, perhaps you will hear its powerful thump, as it reaches down deep within our souls. It is the sharpest thing that I have ever known, and can never be compared to another, especially the one that I knew, when I worked back in…
