The Same Page

Good morning and welcome to everybody.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Many years ago, when I was in high school, I walked into algebra, and there, on the table, was a huge stack of new text books. As the kids filed in, each of the students took one, and found our way to our desks. Each of those books were exactly alike. We were there to learn a specific subject, and to do this, the entire class needed to be unified under the same teachings from the same book. As the teacher read aloud, all of the students would turn their page at the exact same time. Sometimes the students would take turns reading paragraphs to the rest of the class, as the rest of us followed along in our textbook. If the teacher was busy, you could ask your classmate a question because he was studying out of the same book that you were.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

True unity is to be of one mind. It is to share the exact same doctrines and beliefs as a group. There are so many different denominations today because many people reject the true faith. There are so many perversions of the Bible in publication that is no wonder why there is so much disunity. In these perilous times, we are not supposed to allow ourselves to be led away with every wind of doctrine, because everything that we need to survive is found in the New Testament of the King James Bible. Biblical unity can only happen when everybody is on the same page.

Ephesians 4:11-15  And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;  For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:  That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

When people join a club, it’s normally centered upon one thing that everybody shares in common. Some people will join an RC plane club, uniting with others who are of the same interest. Each of them want to gain the knowledge of how to build and fly planes. Likewise in the church, we are joined together under one common interest, serving the Lord Jesus Christ through obedience to the teachings of scripture. To be united, we must believe and agree with what the Bible teaches. If this doesn’t happen, you will have contentions, in-fighting, heresies, false teachings, schisms, and all kinds of other ungodliness. True unity is being joined under the same beliefs, and being of the same mind, striving together like ships that are all sailing in the same direction.

Have you ever looked up into the sky and seen thousands of birds flying perfectly coordinated in patterns? Like an Air Force squadron, they turn together and dive together just like they have one mind. It is called a murmuration, and it is very similar to the way that we need to be in the church. But this coordinated effort cannot happen unless everybody is on the same page together. Consider the human body. Although there are many different parts, they are individually coordinated together, because they all share the same mind. Likewise, in the church, we all are supposed to function together as one, but this can only happen when we are united under Christ and His teachings.

Philippians 2:2 “Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.”

On a baseball team, they join together in unity under one common purpose, the game of baseball. Each baseball team shares unity with other baseball teams, because they are all under the same rules and regulations. They don’t have a hundred different versions of the game, because it would only cause complete confusion and chaos. Each of them abide by the exact same rules of the game, because they are all on the same page together. It is very similar in the church. We must be united under Christ and His teachings. Even though there are hundreds of different forms of Christianity in the world today, there is only one true faith. You will find it in the teachings of the King James Bible. While we are surrounded on every side by so many false versions of our faith, we must contend for the one true one.

Jude 1:3-4  Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

There is only one faith.

Ephesians 4:5 “One Lord, one faith, one baptism,”

It is a faith that we must strive for together, as a unified group.

Philippians 1:27 “Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;”

Once again, when you take a class at school they don’t give you 10 different books to choose from because the class needs to be on the same page together. Many times when you take your vehicle to a mechanic, he will open up a manual which will explain everything that he needs to know about how to fix your engine. If you go to a shop 20 miles away, they have the same book that has the same information to repair the same vehicle. Both mechanics have to do the same thing in order to get your car back on the road, and they are unified through the teachings and instructions in their manuals. Unity has been defined as not being multiple. It is the quality or state of being single, whole or of the same mind. If everyone in the church believes the exact same things, there shouldn’t be any divisions, because it is scriptural truth that binds us together.

1 Corinthians 1:10 “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.”

Unity is being joined together in oneness. It is to be joined together in the same mind and in the same beliefs. True unity is found when we are joined as one, under the teachings of God’s Word. Any unity that is shared must be structured and centered around biblical truth. Jesus is the truth, and His Word is Truth. Like a wagon wheel, the teachings of Christ are the hub of the church, that holds everything together as one unit.

Acts 17:10-11  And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.  These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

If you took a college course and everyone had different textbooks, there would  be absolute confusion and chaos. If a choir is going to sing a hymn, they all need to have the same hymnal. If an orchestra is going to perform a concert, each of the musicians need the same sheet music. For 20 years our family has handed out King James Bibles to communities, to promote unity in the one true faith. What beautiful music we can make together, when everybody is on….
