Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
The SS Californian was a British ship which is thought to have been the only ship close enough to see Titanic’s flares and deck lights on the fateful night that it sank into the sea. It had been determined through inquiries that if they had quickly responded to the situation, there was a high probability that most, if not all of the people could have been saved from the cripled vessel. There were numerous icebergs that had been sighted that night, and Titanic had received warnings of them over their wireless. The iceberg threat was so serious, that the captain of the Californian decided to stop his ship until the morning. But that evening, the radio operator on the Titanic was having a hard time keeping up with all of the passengers’ messages. This high level of traffic resulted in a breakdown of communication with the Californian, and because of his anxiety, he became very short with the Californians radio operator, who completely turned him off and went to bed. People watched as distress flares climbed high into the night sky, but they never went to Titanic’s aid. They never heard Titanic’s cries for help, simply because the radio had been completely shut off.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Life saving information can be lost when you decide to tune things out. People might drive out into a blizzard simply because they refused to listen to the warning on the radio. They could die in a storm because they rejected the warning of an approaching hurricane. God’s Word is like a Spiritual radio that we must never shut off. Our ears must be tuned in each and every day, ready to hear the things that God is telling us, as He leads us on the path of salvation.
Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
James 1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
I have no doubt that people sincerely regretted the circumstances in the radio room that night, but in spite of the events that happened, there is a great lesson to be learned. Having a line of communication that is kept open is very important. It can lead to someone’s salvation, not only physically but spiritually. The Bible is God’s communication to us. He wants to save us, but one thing that can prevent this from happening is by turning off the radio. Once this happens, our ship is destined for peril, and slowly sinks into the darkness of the abyss.
2 Timothy 4:1-4 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
Matthew 13:15-16 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.
John 5:24 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”
We need to be able to hear God’s Word with our hearts, because when we do, it will result in becoming a doer of what it says. If we want to be overcomers and completely freed from our sins, repentance and submission to the will of God is required. We must mortify the things of the carnal nature and turn to the things of the Holy Spirit.
John 8:31-36 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
We need to be quick to hear, and ready to listen, as we are fed spiritual food from men of God. We must be prepared whenever we hear its warnings and corrections, knowing that God wants to guide and protect us.
Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
Those who are truly of God are going to listen to God’s Words.
1 John 4:6 “We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.”
John 8:47 “He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.”
Like turning on the wireless, we must open up our ears to the teachings of God’s Word. We must receive the messages that God is sending to us through scripture, as He communicates His will and purpose for each of our lives. We never want to switch off the truth. Just think about how big a difference that it could have made, if they had only kept the radio on, that night, out on…..
