Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
When I was a young child, we had a very deep well, and on hot summer days we would turn on the green garden hose and get a cold and refreshing drink of water. Perhaps our house was a little different than others because in the kitchen, we had two different faucets. One of the taps dispensed completely clear water, but the water from the other one was stained red by all of the minerals from the ground. The clear water came from the conditioner, while the hard water came directly from the well.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Just like that red water, each of us are stained with sin. Like a water conditioner, our hearts need to go through a process of purification. We must sanctify ourselves, cleansing our minds of anything that is displeasing to God.
2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Many times when you work out in the garden or repair something in the garage, what’s the first thing that you normally do when you come into the house? We tend to wash our hands. As we stand over the sink, we will get rid of all the dirt and grime that has accumulated on them. Just like washing your hands, our hearts must go through a cleansing too. We must completely purify ourselves from sin.
James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Isaiah 1:16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;
In order to get to a place of perfection, we need to shun the deeds of the flesh.
1 Peter 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
Romans 13:12-14 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
Titus 2:11-14 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
2 Timothy 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
To become purified, we need to walk in the truth, and cast off the old works of darkness.
Ephesians 4:17-24 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
But ye have not so learned Christ;
If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
We must walk in the Spirit to overcome the flesh.
Galatians 5:16-17 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
To someday enter into eternal life, we must go through the process of sanctification. We must transform from darkness to light, and sinners into saints. We are called to purity.
1 John 3:2-3 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
1 Timothy 1:5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Psalms 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
In order to enter eternal life, it’s going to require mortifying the sinful nature. It’s going to require purifying our hearts, as we pass them through the conditioner of God’s truth. Each of us must eliminate the stain of sin in our lives, and I’m reminded of that, whenever I think about the red water coming out of….
