Digging up Bones

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

We like to cook a lot of chicken in our home, and when we’re done eating, our dog is looking forward to one of her favorite treats, chicken bones. She will lay down and wait patiently throughout the meal until I put three or four of them in her dog dish. Dogs have a curious behavior. Many times they will pick up one of the biggest bones, and walk into the backyard searching for a good place to dig a hole. They eventually place their bone in the ground and bury it, until it’s completely hidden from view.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Liars and deceivers do the same things. They begin to live a lie. They don’t want their lies to be exposed, so like a dog in the backyard, they bury the truth, hoping that nobody will ever be able to find it.

“A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.”

  — Proverbs 19:9

Have you ever made a promise to your children that you were going to take them somewhere, but something else came up? Although we might have the best intentions, God can change things during our day. A promise might not be fulfilled occasionally, but that doesn’t make somebody a liar. When somebody lies, it is done with the willful and purposeful intent to deceive others, whether they are adults or even children. A liar wants you to believe something that isn’t true, usually to gain some type of personal advantage over others. These are the works of the devil, who has been doing this type of thing since the garden of Eden. He intentionally beguiled Eve, leading her away from the truth so that she would believe his lie instead. There are severe repercussions and consequences for those who deceive others from the truth.

“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

  — Revelation 21:8

“A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.”

  — Proverbs 19:5

The Christian faith is based in the truth which is found in Christ Jesus. Lies go in complete contravention to everything that God is. Liars will be punished here upon the Earth, and eventually at judgment Day. They will not escape, because their deeds will be exposed.

Acts 5. ¹ But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,  ² And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.  ³ But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? ⁴ Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.  ⁵ And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.  ⁶ And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him. ⁷ And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.  ⁸ And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.  ⁹ Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.

¹⁰ Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.  ¹¹ And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.

Many people who are living a lie love the fact that they are avoiding detection for a short period of time, but God will avenge that behavior speedily. God hates a lying tongue, and those who promulgate a lie. They will miss out on eternal life, and be punished forever.

“For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.”

  — Revelation 22:15

“And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie……

  — Revelation 21:27

“He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.”

  — Psalms 101:7

It is the devil who creates lies and a false narrative, in an effort to keep people from knowing and believing the truth.

“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”

  — John 8:44

Deceit is the practice of deceiving somebody by concealing and misrepresenting the truth. A deceiver will make the attempt to persuade somebody that something false is true, keeping the truth hidden from others for their own advantage. They practice deceit, falsehood and treachery by both their words or their actions.

“Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:”

  — Romans 3:13

Psalms 52. ⁴ Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue. ⁵ God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.

Christians are called to believe the truth, live the truth, and speak the truth.

“Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;”

  — Colossians 3:9

Christians are called to walk honestly in this sinful world.

1 Timothy 2. ¹ I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; ² For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

“Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly.”

  — Hebrews 13:18

There are many deceivers in the world who are trying to seduce people to believe their lies with them. They will try to suppress the truth anyway they can, to prevent it from being exposed for what it really is. One of these days a dog is going to go out in someone’s backyard, and start looking around. They will eventually find the spot where they first dug, and begin to paw the ground with their feet. Eventually they find what they buried. The truth will not stay hidden forever, because someday it will be completely exposed, just like when a dog begins….
