Good Morning and welcome in. Today we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
When I was a young boy I can remember people carving out a huge boulder, and filling it up with personal items. They could put just about anything in there, including pictures, historical records, newspapers, or other knick knacks that were representative of that day and age. Eventually, when it was completely filled, it was sealed up, and not to be opened until a later date sometime in the future.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Each day, everybody puts something into the time capsule of their heart. Day by day, it continues to store up things during the brief period of their lives, whether they be good or bad. When it is finally filled up, and one’s life has expired upon the Earth, like a casket it is closed up and the time capsule is buried deep into the ground. It can be there for many years, until it is eventually raised up by God, to be opened in his presence, revealing everything deep inside. At that moment, the hidden things of darkness will be exposed to all, and God will judge every man according to his works.
Romans 2. ⁵ But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; ⁶ Who will render to every man according to his deeds: ⁷ To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: ⁸ But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, ⁹ Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; ¹⁰ But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: ¹¹ For there is no respect of persons with God.
Impenitence is refusing to turn away from your sins and to walk in the will of God. Instead of submitting to God’s purpose for your life, you choose to do your own thing instead. The Lord Jesus loved us so much that He laid down His own life to deliver us from our sins, so that we could become perfected into His image, but because of the hardness of people’s hearts, they reject the path of loving obedience to Christ, and walk in rebellion instead. Each day that passes by, another coin of contention is dropped into the piggy bank of one’s heart, and without repentance and obedience to God’s truth, they are only storing up His wrath.
Hebrews 10 ²⁶ For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, ²⁷ But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. ²⁸ He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
²⁹ Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? ³⁰ For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. ³¹ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
God will reward every man according to his deeds. If the time capsule of your heart is filled with good works, then you will be rewarded accordingly. God rewards a diligent and obedient heart.
John 5. ²⁸ Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, ²⁹ And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
There is one thing that nobody will be able to avoid, and that is having an appointment in God’s courtroom. Nobody will be able to escape God’s judgment, because Justice will be served.
Revelation 20. ¹¹ And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. ¹² And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
Those who are contentious towards the will of God, will only experience His wrath.
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;”
— Romans 1:18
God is not a respecter of persons, and does not show favoritism. It doesn’t matter if they are a king, a judge, a prisoner or somebody who lives in an alley on skid row. All will be treated equally in the eyes of God. Unlike the corruption in this world, God’s judgment cannot be bought and is not politically motivated. He doesn’t doesn’t grant special privilege, or treat people differently because of their ethnicity or being male or female. It doesn’t matter if they are tall, short, pretty or homely, what matters is if they believed in Jesus Christ, repented of their wicked deeds, and humbly submitted to the will of God. If these things do not happen in somebody’s life, any hope of eternal salvation will be lost. I’m sure millions and millions of people are going to feel that they will be in heaven, but they will come up short. This is because it’s a very narrow path of obedience, and few are going to find it.
Matthew 7 ¹³ Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: ¹⁴ Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Matthew 7 ²¹ Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
²² Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
²³ And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Someday the time capsule of your heart will be opened by God, and everybody will be judged according to their works.
“Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.”
— 1 Corinthians 4:5
Like putting things away into storage, each day that passes, things are being put inside of our hearts. It happens through the lives that we live, and the deeds that we do. Some people store up good and obedient works towards God, while others stoke the fires of impenitence and rebellion.
People cannot run away forever, because one day, everyone will have an appointment with God. At that moment, He is going to take a final look, to see all the things that people have been storing up for many years, hidden deep inside of their own….
