Anchor of Truth

Good Morning and welcome in everybody. Today we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Over a century ago in Netherton England, something was made that would eventually go down in the history books. In 1911, the iron works of Noah Hingley and sons was commissioned to manufacture the anchors and chain for the RMS Titanic. This big ship was going to need a big anchor, and they were willing to take on this enormous task. They went on to create a huge anchor that weighed in at a whopping 16 tons! Historians claim that at the time, it was the world’s largest anchor ever forged by hand. It was over 18 1/2 ft long and 10 ft 9 in. wide. The anchor took several months to complete, and when it was finally finished, they had to consider how they would get this massive piece of iron to Titanic’s shipyard in Ireland. Moving something of this size would be a feat in and of itself, and the first leg of its journey was probably the greatest test of all. They would need to transport it over rugged terrain, and deliver it to the Dudley train station which was approximately two miles away. To move it, they decided to use twenty horses that were capable of pulling two tons a piece. They put the anchor on a huge cart, and slowly made their way along dirt tracks, cobblestones, and up steep inclines, as townspeople and spectators lined the streets to watch the historic event. It eventually reached its final destination, and the anchor was permanently attached to the Titanic.

This reminds me of the Christian Life

Anchors are created to hold one’s position in the water. As gale force winds blow across the bow, and the waves crash over the ship, it is a strong anchor that holds the vessel stationary in its place. God’s Word is an anchor for our souls, one to whom we must be permanently attached. It keeps us firmly fixed in our faith, it secures our hearts to the truth, and keeps us unmovable in our convictions, through whatever storms may arise. As this sinful world tries to move our ships out of position, we must remain well rooted to the teachings of Christ.

Colossians 2. ⁶ As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:  ⁷ Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.  ⁸ Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.  ⁹ For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. ¹⁰ And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

When something is well rooted, it is established very deeply. When we are securely anchored to God’s Word, we become unmovable, like a huge oak tree whose roots keep it firmly in place. When the winds of false doctrine, worldly philosophy, and heresy attempt to blow our vessels off course, it is being anchored to the scriptures that keeps us on the narrow path of Christ. When the waves of worldly concepts and carnal teachings begin to surround us, it is God’s Holy Word that keeps us fixed in our faith.

Ephesians 4 ¹⁴ That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; ¹⁵ But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

The Apostle warns the church not to become spoiled. If a captain is not careful, their vessel can be shipwrecked upon the rocks. One’s faith can become corrupted when it is not anchored to the truth. When people get too far away from God’s Word, they can begin to forget what He wants them to do. He requires us to become sanctified by turning away from things that are displeasing to Him, by keeping our feet firmly planted in Scripture. Like a captain of a great ship, it is only then that we can become a vessel of honour to our God.

2 Timothy 2 ²⁰ But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.  ²¹ If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

The devil is actively seeking to seduce and deceive you, but we must reject his lies for the anchor of God’s Word, knowing that it is strong enough to keep us in place, like building your home upon a rock.

Luke 6. ⁴⁷ Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:  ⁴⁸ He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

To obtain eternal life, we must continue daily in the teachings of Christ. When we do, they can save us and deliver us from harm.

“Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.”

  — 1 Timothy 4:16

We must be anchored to the scriptures each day, lest people begin to wander and become hardened by sin.

Hebrews 3. ¹² Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.  ¹³ But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. ¹⁴ For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;

We must continue in the faith, grounded and settled.

Colossians 1 ²¹ And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled. ²² In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:  ²³ If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

Because of what Jesus did on the cross, we can have great hope of being able to enter eternal life. What we need to do is trust Him enough to turn from our wickedness, and walk in the light, knowing that our efforts will be rewarded with everlasting mercy at the final judgment.

Hebrews 6 ¹⁸ That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: ¹⁹ Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

Walking in the faith is a day by day commitment to the teachings of scripture. God wants to save us, but we must continue to abide in His Word. We must never allow ourselves to float off into the abyss, but check each morning, just to make sure that we continue to be firmly secured to His….
