Eternal Inheritance

Goodmorning and welcome in everybody. Today we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from the book of Hebrews.

Hebrews 6 ¹² That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. ¹³ For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, ¹⁴ Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. ¹⁵ And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

In order to obtain eternal life, it is going to require some diligent effort on your part. The Lord Jesus taught us to strive to enter the straight Gate because many would seek to enter in, but would not be able. This is because they never truly repented in their hearts or mortified the sins of the flesh. Instead of possessing an energetic and obedient faith, they possessed a lazy one instead. That’s the philosophy of the world isn’t it, do nothing to obtain something! God gives a promise of eternal life, but to eventually obtain it, you will need to patiently and lovingly submit to the will of God. In order to finally inherit God’s coming Kingdom, we must first depart from sin and overcome the carnal nature. 

Revelation 21 ⁷ He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

⁸ But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Everything on this earth, including the planet itself, will someday be dissolved, and the only inheritance that will actually matter in the end, is being able to receive God’s inheritance. Those who have humbled themselves under His mighty hand will be raised up to a new heaven and a new Earth, an eternal reward prepared for God’s meek and obedient children.

“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5

“For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.” Hebrews 13:14

Think of what Moses might have inherited if he had stayed in Egypt, but he realized that obtaining Christ was greater riches than any treasures on this Earth. His heart was completely focused on the eternal things of God, rather than the temporary things of men.

Hebrews 11 ²⁴ By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; ²⁵ Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; ²⁶ Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

To obtain eternal inheritance, we must continue to patiently abide in the teachings of Christ. We must continue to walk in the truth and depart from iniquity. If you truly possess biblical hope, you will purify yourself just as God is pure. Heaven is a place that is reserved for saints, not for sinners who refused to repent.

“Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,” 1 Corinthians 6:9

Have you ever waited in line to be seated at a restaurant when they told you that a suit and tie was required to eat there? Sanctification is something that is required to enter into heaven. It is to completely rid yourself of sinful desires and activities. God’s inheritance will only be given to those who are sanctified.

“And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.” Acts 20:32

All of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God. To obtain eternal life, that corrupt person inside each of us must be crucified with Christ, being put to death in our hearts. Sin will not enter into heaven,….. just as corruption doesn’t inherit incorruption.

“Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.” 1 Corinthians 15:50

When you place your faith and trust in Christ Jesus, we can become a part of God’s family, and someday be the recipient of His eternal inheritance. As a Christian, we have been written into God’s will, so to speak, but as He has graciously written us into His will, we must walk in His will. We must faithfully abide in Him and the teachings of Holy Scripture, if we want to obtain an inheritance that lasts forever.

“The LORD knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever.” Psalms 37:18

Some people are so concerned about receiving Earthly inheritances, that it becomes a stumbling block to their relationship with God. Jesus called men to preach the gospel, but their desire to obtain Earthly things clouded their judgment. Men of the world desire temporal things, while men of God seek eternal ones. A Christian is not concerned about a temporal inheritance but is patiently waiting to receive one that will never fade away.

1 Peter 1. ³ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, ⁴ To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

Matthew 25 ³¹ When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: ³² And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: ³³ And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. ³⁴ Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

What a sad thing to watch when somebody dies, and all the relatives fight in court over the inheritance. This happens all the time, and the worst part is some of them profess to be Christian. Suing each other in a courtroom is forbidden in Scripture, as well as being greedy and covetous.

Luke 12. ¹³ And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. ¹⁴ And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? ¹⁵ And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

To inherit an eternal inheritance, you must be capable of letting go of Earthly ones.

Matthew 19 ²⁹ And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life. ³⁰ But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.

Why invest all your time and energy into things that are going to disappear in the future? Every business ever created, every home that has ever been constructed, and every city that has ever been built will eventually be all gone. Everything on this planet will be eliminated and burned up by God. 

Considering that, what is your heart focused on?  What are your greatest concerns, are they Spiritual? Are you seeking after the unseen things of God?  Are you waiting patiently for God’s eternal Kingdom, and the everlasting reward of…..
