That Old Junker

Good Morning and welcome in everybody. Today we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Have you ever wondered why a dad will purchase a junky older car for their child’s first vehicle? This is because he wants to see how you are going to take care of it. Some young people who just got their driver’s license will take their first car out in the woods and when nobody’s watching, put it through the ringer. When they finally get back home, the vehicle is covered in mud and they don’t even bother to wash it. Maybe they ran into a ditch and bent one of the fenders, or even worse, they lost the muffler. Parents are watching to see how you take care of the things that they give you. Your actions speak louder than words and if you can’t take care of a $500 pickup truck, why would somebody buy you a brand new one?

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

True faithfulness begins by first learning to take care of the little things. Each day God is watching, to see how you use the grace that He has provided. You need to be capable of showing your faithfulness in the little things, before you are ever given responsibility of bigger things.

Luke 16 ¹⁰ He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.

¹¹ If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? ¹² And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own? ¹³ No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. ¹⁴ And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him. ¹⁵ And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

When somebody is faithful, they will remain loyal and steadfast to somebody or something.  Faithful people show allegiance, and are constantly devoted to a certain cause, and the duties that they entail. They are true blue inside of their hearts, completely dedicated, committed, unswerving, reliable and obedient. They are authentic and loyal followers. A Christian is called to possess this attitude towards God. The Lord Jesus is our perfect example of faithfulness and loyalty towards the heavenly Father.

Hebrews 3 ¹ Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; ² Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house. ³ For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.

⁴ For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God. ⁵ And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; ⁶ But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

God is watching, and will certainly reward those who faithfully and obediently serve Him. When we humbly submit to His will, He will lift us up. He did this in the life of Joseph, and He will do it again, to all those who meekly obey Him.

1 Peter 5 ⁵ Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. ⁶ Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: ⁷ Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Scripture teaches that the love of money is the root of all evil. Many of the Pharisees were greedy and covetous of gain, just as many religious leaders are today. Their desire for Earthly possessions outweighs the desire to help the poor and needy. Everything that we have has been given to us by God, and He is watching closely to see what you do with the temporal wealth of this world.

Matthew 25 ¹⁴ For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. ¹⁵ And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. ¹⁶ Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. ¹⁷ And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. ¹⁸ But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.

¹⁹ After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. ²⁰ And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. ²¹  His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. ²² He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. ²³ His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. ²⁴ Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: ²⁵ And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.

²⁶  His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: ²⁷ Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. ²⁸ Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. ²⁹ For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. ³⁰ And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

There’s a wonderful example in Scripture of a poor woman who was faithful with the little things that she had.

Mark 12 ⁴¹ And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. ⁴² And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.

⁴³ And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: ⁴⁴ For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

The walk of a Christian begins by becoming faithfully obedient to God in the little things. These things must be achieved first, before greater things are handed down to you. Many of us are content with our old trucks, but maybe now you can understand why your dad might still have you driving….
