Perilous Times

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today we’re going to take a look at a passage of Scripture from 2nd Timothy.

2 Timothy 3 ¹ This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. ² For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, ³ Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, ⁴ Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; ⁵ Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. ⁶ For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, ⁷ Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. ⁸  Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. ⁹ But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.

Perilous means very hazardous and full of danger or risk. Imagine what the world looked like right before the great flood. The world was so filled with sin that It ultimately had to be destroyed by God. Take a look around you at all of the wickedness in this world today. Each day that passes, it will fall further away from the truth. It is an outward sign that the return of Jesus Christ is drawing near. 

Luke 17 ²⁶ And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. ²⁷ They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. ²⁸ Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; ²⁹ But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.

“But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.” 2 Timothy 3:13

There are going to be many people who expect to be in the Kingdom of heaven but will simply not make it. This is because they never repented of their sins. They never crucified the flesh and ridded themselves of the things that are offensive to God. Many of them will certainly claim to be religious, even followers of Jesus, but their works will deny Him. Rather than love Christ enough to turn away from their sins, they loved their sins more.

“Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” 2 Timothy 2:19

Many people will claim to be Christian, yet refuse the path of obedience to the doctrines and teachings of Christ. Rather than bringing themselves into compliance with God’s will, they stubbornly resist the path of repentance. These are not true brethren in Christ, because anybody who professes to be a child of God would lovingly turn away from the things that God hates. These types of people needed to be completely avoided.

Romans 16 ¹⁷ Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. ¹⁸ For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. ¹⁹ For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.

Some people are going to depart from the true faith. They will either reject it completely or end up walking in a skewed form of Christianity. This is already happening as some major denominations are joining together and worshiping with devil worshipers. They have women teaching God’s Word, and the effeminate leading their groups. This will continue to grow worse, as people rebelliously dishonor the gospel of Christ. Rather than holding on to the truth, they hold on to the beliefs and doctrines of this world.

1 Timothy 4 ¹ Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

² Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

“Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,” 2 Peter 3:3

Jude 1 ¹⁷ But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; ¹⁸ How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.

These are the types of men who creep into a home, and completely deceive a woman. They share the same qualities as the devil when he seduced Eve in the garden of Eden. They will even come to a church gathering, but it’s not because they are a believer. The reason why they show up is because they want to sleep with one of the women from the group. These men are sick with filled with the disease of sin.

“Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls…..2 Peter 2:14

They will be constantly learning, but they never really figure out that the Christian life is all about repentance and obedience. It’s about humble submission to the will of God. Knowledge by itself does not save you, action does.

“Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.” 1 Timothy 4:16

Many people are going to resist the truth of scripture. 

“Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.” Acts 7:51

Some people who profess the Christian faith will refuse to humbly submit to the will of God, and their conscience will become defiled. Rather than walking in the truth, they will believe a lie instead which will ultimately result in their own damnation.

Titus 1 ¹⁵ Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. ¹⁶ They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

But their foolishness will be openly exposed to everybody. Look at what Judas did, and 2,000 years later people still remember the wicked deeds that he committed. 

1 Timothy 5 ²⁴ Some men’s sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after. ²⁵ Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid.

The sinfulness in this world will grow steadily worse until the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. Eventually this wicked place and everything in it will be burned up by God, and we must patiently wait to inherit the new world that is coming. We must hold fast to our faith. We must be strong in our convictions. We must fend off the wolves as we sojourn in a strange land, in an era of….
