Have you ever seen two sports teams play against each other, but clearly one side was far, far more talented than the other, and as a result that team won overwhelmingly easily? The other team might fight and try as hard as they can, but because they were so overmatched by the better team they simply failed.
That kind of reminds me of a time when I was 10 or 11 in school, and one day in recess we brought out a long tug-of-war rope, and our teacher put himself on one side and the entire rest of the class on the other, and as you may have guessed, we easily overpowered him and won. Certainly, we were all young children, but the sheer amount of power that the entire class of children had collectively easily gave us the victory.
And when I think about that I think about the account of David and Goliath in the Old Testament, and how greatly it shows our Lord’s power. As a mighty man of war, the Philistine Goliath challenged Israel to send out a champion to fight him. Standing over 9 feet tall, Goliath must have been a terrifying sight to the Israelite army. No one would step forward to challenge him, until young David came one day to bring his brothers some food. Upon learning that no one would go and fight, David told the king that that day the Lord would deliver Goliath into his hand. David was not afraid; God had delivered him from many dangerous beasts before, and David knew that God would be on his side once again when he fought Goliath. Though David himself was just a youth, he had the greatest Power ever to fight for him. He had the Lord, and he easily conquered Goliath.
Conquer means “to defeat (as in combat); to subjugate; to overcome; to gain, win, or obtain by effort.”
This present day, there is a constant war raging on: the war between good and evil. The devil is always fighting against the Lord and His servants, trying to do anything that he can to try to stop God’s Word from reaching people’s hearts.
The wickedness out in the world is only going to become worse and worse, as more people refuse to turn to Christ. But for those a part of the army of God, we can remain strong. Persecutions may come, we may be hated because we believe in Jesus, we may even be killed for our faith in Christ, but we don’t need to be afraid.
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:35-39
Jesus was persecuted, and as His followers we can expect the same. They may be able to kill our body, but they can’t kill our soul. The love of Christ fills us with strength and there is no one that can take that away from us.
“So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.” Hebrews 13:6
There is nothing that can separate us from the love of God. Nothing! The devil may try to make us fall, as he did with Job, but just like Job, we need to remain stedfast in the faith.
“What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31
Through Him we are more than conquerors, and in that we may rest assured that we will emerge victorious!
In Christ,
Andrew
