Wandering Stars

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today we are going to take a look at a passage of Scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.

When I was in high school, I really enjoyed astronomy class. I liked all of our frequent visits to the planetarium, memorizing the many features of the moon, and watching all of the meteor showers as they illuminated the night sky. Throughout history, the stars have been used as a directional guide and for navigational purposes. This is because they remain in a relatively fixed position in space. But when we look into the night sky, it can be hard to tell the difference between a star and a planet with the naked eye. Even in recent years, you might momentarily confuse a star with a satellite as it quickly passes over the Earth. Apparently in ancient days, they would watch as certain stars would move across the sky in an aimless fashion, but what they were looking at, weren’t really stars at all. They were actually planets that were orbiting around our sun. They can appear like a star, they can shine like a star, but unlike a star, they move around and change position. Because of this, they became known as the wandering stars.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Many people appear to be Christian on the exterior, and may shine with radiance on the outside, but rather than staying the course and remaining fixed in the teachings of our faith, they wander off into obscurity. Rather than submitting to the truth of God’s Word, they resist it, deceiving not only themselves, but many others who follow after them.

Jude 1. ¹² These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;  ¹³ Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

To wander is defined as to move around and go to different places, usually without having a particular purpose or direction. Rather than abiding in the teachings of our faith some people will wander off, deviating from the truth. They know the will of God, and what He expects from them, but rather than humbly submit, they turn their ears away from the truth.

2 Timothy 4 ³ For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; ⁴ And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Just like Lot’s wife departed from her husband and then turned back to the world, some people simply will not have the endurance to make it all the way to the finish line in heaven. Rather than love the Lord and His teachings, they will love the world instead, proving not only their unworthiness, but their unwillingness to obediently submit to His will.

2 Peter 2 ²⁰ For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.

²¹ For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.

²² But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

It’s clear that in order to get to heaven, one has to repent of their sins. To inherit a perfect Holy place, we must transform from sinners into saints. When you go to the car wash and vacuum your vehicle, all of your garbage is removed and goes into the waste receptacle. We too must remove any sinful behavior from our lives, seeking Holiness and the will of God. We must cleanse ourselves from all iniquity, and completely forsake the works of the flesh.

“He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” — Proverbs 28:13

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” — 2 Chronicles 7:14

But some people will be reluctant to do this. Rather than repenting of their sins, they will listen to people who tell them what they want to hear. Rather than loving Christ and obeying His commands, they will love their sins more. No doubt, they want to maintain their Christianity, but they don’t want to do the things that Christianity teaches. They want to walk on both sides of the fence, with one foot in the world and one foot in the church. It is a lukewarm Christianity that will eventually be spewed out of the mouth of God.

1 Timothy 4 ¹ Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; ² Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

It’s a foregone conclusion that if people are going to sin willfully after the knowledge of the truth, they cannot find a place of repentance with God. With knowledge comes great responsibility. To know the grace of God and be enlightened with the teachings of our faith, but then in full knowledge completely rebel against Him, is an overt act of hatred towards the one who laid down His own life for us at the cross. Those who do such things are worthy of damnation.

“Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,” 2 Peter 3:3

True men of God are hated and persecuted in this world, while false prophets are spoken highly of. The world doesn’t want to repent, so they follow after those who preach that it’s not required. If sin is acceptable in the church, then the entire world shows up! After all, that’s the kind of message that they want to hear.

2 Peter 2 ¹ But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. ² And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. ³ And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

There will be many people who fail to make it to eternal life. This is because the path to heaven is extremely narrow. Many others will be led into a false form of Christianity, deceived by others and deceiving themselves. Rather than abiding in the truth and repenting from dead works, they will foam out their own shame. They might appear that they are filled up with light, while the truth is, that they are just another group of………
