Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today we are going to take a look at a passage of Scripture from 1st Corinthians.
“If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.” 1 Corinthians 16:22
There are numerous people who have claimed that the theory of “unconditional love” actually began back in the 1930s, and of all things, was put forth by an atheist. Many people who profess to be Christian adopted some of these secular beliefs, trying to combine them with the teachings of our faith. Over the years they have done the same thing with the theory of evolution, denying the Word of God for the word of men. It’s no wonder why so many false churches are so far away from the truth in Christ. It’s because they are the sons and daughters of heretics. To abide in God’s love requires certain conditions to be met, because if they are not, He will turn away from them at judgment Day.
Matthew 7 ²¹ Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. ²² Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? ²³ And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
To abide in God’s love is conditional, based upon obedience to His will.
John 15 ¹⁰ If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
In a sentence, the word “if” is used to introduce a conditional clause. It means that a particular thing can or will happen only if something else happens. For example, your dad will let you use the car this weekend, if you finish your homework. In order to reap the promise he’s given, you must do what he has commanded to do. A farmer might promise to give you a certain amount of money to pick rocks from his field, but if you never show up for work, do you really expect to be paid? Through Christ Jesus, we have the promise of eternal life, but in order to reap that promise, one must walk according to the will of God.
“Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” John 15:14
Heaven is a place that is reserved for those who have purified themselves from sin. God’s love is sinless, and to obtain eternal life, we must walk in this same type of love. Repentance is the key. People can never repent of sins, if they continue living in their sins! God can present us blameless in His sight If we continue in the faith, which requires loving obedience and humble submission to His teachings.
Colossians 1 ²¹ And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled ²² In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: ²³ If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;
Paul taught Timothy the conditions for one’s salvation.
“Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.” 1 Timothy 4:16
The New Testament is filled with conditions that must be met in order to obtain eternal life.
Romans 2 ⁵ But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; ⁶ Who will render to every man according to his deeds: ⁷ To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: ⁸ But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, ⁹ Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; ¹⁰ But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: ¹¹ For there is no respect of persons with God.
Those who live in sin don’t abide in God’s love and will reap what they sow.
“Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord GOD.” Ezekiel 22:31
Galatians 6 ⁷ Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
⁸ For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
Those who don’t walk according to God’s purpose, are not even a part of the family of God.
“For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.” Mark 3:35
In a courtroom, a judge might be merciful with an offender, granting them probation so they can correct their behavior. He might extend them a grace period so they can amend their lifestyle. But if an offender chooses to go out and commit crimes all over again, the judge is going to throw them in prison. This is because they mocked his mercy. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, the heavenly Father extends us a gift of forgiveness. This is so that we can turn away from sin and walk in the light. But those who mock that gift of Mercy and rebel against His commands are going to find themselves outside of His love. Even though the Lord Jesus died to cleanse them from their sins, those who chose to continue living in them will abide in God’s wrath forever.
Hebrews 10 ²⁹ Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? ³⁰ For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. ³¹ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Some people will begin the Christian life but like Lot’s wife, will decide to reject God’s commands. Without any fear of God they will return to their past, and at that point, the only thing in their future is punishment.
“Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.” Hebrews 10:38
Many people claim to believe in Jesus, but to sincerely believe in Jesus is to lovingly submit to His teachings. Even though Jesus died to deliver them from their sins, those who rebel and refuse to repent, will inherit God’s wrath.
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” John 3:36
Without obedience and a complete transformation, people are only lying to themselves.
James 1 ²¹ Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. ²² But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. ²³ For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: ²⁴ For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. ²⁵ But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
God’s love is conditional because it is based upon obedience to His will.
