The Perfect Son

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today we are going to take a look at a passage of Scripture from the book of Hebrews.

“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6

The entirety of the Christian Life is about becoming pleasing unto God, and in order to do this, we must humbly turn away from the way that we used to live, to the will of God. Each of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God, but through the grace of God in Christ Jesus, we have the opportunity to become a brand new creature than what we were in the past. We can be transformed from a sinner into a saint, but this process can only happen if you possess genuine faith. Genuine faith is what causes true inward obedience towards God. To be a disciple of Christ is to be filled with His attributes. He is our perfect example of what God wants us to become, and He is always faithful and obedient to the Heavenly Father.

“And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.” John 8:29

Matthew 3 ¹⁶ And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

¹⁷ And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

It is only because by what Jesus did for us on the cross that sinners could have the chance to change. Because we are all sinners by nature, none of us pleased God. Because of our own sinful activities, we were children of wrath even as others. But because of what Jesus did, God grants us a new chance to change the way that we live, as we renounce sin, and open our arms to faithful obedience to God. This gracious opportunity is available to Jews and gentiles alike who turn from their wicked deeds to walk in the faith of Abraham. Those who possess genuine faith, as he did, will completely rid themselves of sin and the desires of the carnal nature.

“And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.” Galatians 5:24

Have you ever tried to please your boss at work by doing everything they told you to do? More than likely, your obedience to them resulted in promotions or even a better wage. Obedience is rewarded in society, but obedience to the will of God will result in something far greater than the world could ever offer you…eternal life. Obedience results in being filled with God’s Holy Spirit, which is given to those who obey.

“And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.” Acts 5:32

Each day that passes, the seducers and deceivers in this world continue to grow. They profess faith in the Lord Jesus, but walk in complete disobedience and rebellion to His will. They are false prophets and false Apostles, who only possess an outward appearance of godliness, but have not the Holy Spirit. They preach a false Jesus and a false gospel, leading people away with them into rebellion against the truth. The faith that they profess isn’t faith at all because it  doesn’t result in submission to God’s will, nor explaining to others the error of impenitence. Granted, each of us have sinned and come short of God’s glory, but unless people repent and turn from their sins, they will die. Those who walk in the flesh cannot please God, which is a requirement to inherit eternal life.

Romans 8 ⁵ For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. ⁶ For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. ⁷ Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. ⁸ So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

God was not well pleased with certain Jews because of their impenitence.

1 Corinthians 10 ¹ Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; ² And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; ³ And did all eat the same spiritual meat; ⁴ And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. ⁵ But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

Again, consider Christ Jesus as an example of the perfect Son.

“For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” 2 Peter 1:17

We too must become faithful and obedient servants, in order to finally enter into the joy of our Lord.

“His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” Matthew 25:21

Enoch pleased God so much that he was delivered from death. We must seek this same humble obedience towards God.

“By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.” Hebrews 11:5

The Apostle Paul referred to himself as the chief of sinners, but look at all of the incredible things that God did in his life. Paul’s heart completely changed, as he humbly submitted to the will of God. His life is an example to all of us of becoming pleasing to God.

“Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.”  1 Thessalonians 4:1

“That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;” Colossians 1:10

“But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” Hebrews 13:16

God will reward those who walk in His perfect will, showering His obedient children with blessings from above, but this will only happen if you possess sincere faith and love for God. In order to be perfected into what He wants us to become, we will need to become pleasing unto Him in everything. We must lovingly follow the example of our Lord Jesus, who has always served the Heavenly Father, as…..
