Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today we are going to take a look at a passage of Scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
Many years ago, before I was baptized into the faith, I noticed that occasionally record producers would take a popular song from the radio, and change it into something different. Some of them were absolutely atrocious! They might take a well-known country song, change it into a polka, and then release a completely different version of the tune. It might have some of the same lyrics or even the same progressions, but wasn’t even close to what was originally recorded. All they did was take the song and try to make it fit into a different genre.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
For thousands of years, people have tried to modify “love” to make it fit all kinds of immoral situations in the world. They call it love, they proclaim it as love, but it’s not genuine love. It’s just another version, created to satisfy the lusts of a sinful world.
“And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.” 2 John 1:6
As the Apostle teaches, true love will obey the commandments of God. If there’s no obedience to the teachings of Christ, then a person really doesn’t possess genuine love at all. The brotherly love that is spoken of throughout the scriptures is based upon a love for Christ Jesus. If you don’t love Jesus enough to obey Him, then you place yourself outside of the fellowship of other believers. All over the world, people use the word “love” every single day, but it’s not the love spoken of in the scriptures. It’s just a generic and worldly application of the word to support all kinds of wicked and evil living.
God is love, but it is not the carnal love that you find out in the world, where they have twisted its meaning into something perverted, sick and immoral. People profess to be “in love” but live in fornication and other forbidden sexual relationships. Some people who claim to be Christian are caught up in homosexuality, even raising precious little children, surrounding them with their wicked lifestyles. That’s not Divine love, it is the perverted love of this world. Those who are involved with such deeds, along with those who support them will ultimately suffer the same fate as Sodom and Gomorrah.
Romans 1 ²⁴ Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
²⁵ Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. ²⁶ For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: ²⁷ And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
Jude 1 ³ Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
⁴ For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁵ I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. ⁶ And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
⁷ Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
Scripture defines what is sinful and wrong, so when people live according to the flesh and claim that they love one another, they walk in darkness and are blinded by their own sins. God is love, but Divine love is pure and sinless. Divine love is based on the teachings of Christ Jesus, while worldly love is based on the sinful teachings of this place. God’s love is Spiritual, while the love in this world is carnal. One is pure and benevolent, while the other is stained by the sin of lust, fornication, and lasciviousness. One is genuine and sincere, while the other is filled with adultery and deceit. One is filled with the truth, while the other is filled with deception and lies.
True Charity is eternal, which can only be known through a love for Christ Jesus. The world’s version of love is temporal and will eventually be cast into the Lake of Fire. Many people in this world proclaim to possess the virtues of love, but it is not the same as God’s love because it is completely void of Spiritual understanding and the knowledge of Christ. In order to walk in true love, one must learn Spiritual love, which is found throughout the teachings of the New Testament. Many children learn how to ride a bike or take lessons to learn how to swim. The church is a place of Spiritual education where we learn how to love God first of all, and then learn how to love one another. But unlike the world, Divine love is based in scriptural TRUTH and obedience to the will of Christ Jesus.
“The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.” 3 John 1:1
“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” 1 John 3:18
“But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:” Ephesians 4:15
True love will always result in obedience to the teachings of God.
“For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” 1 John 5:3
Some do not possess scriptural love because they love lies instead.
“For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.” Revelation 22:15
2 Thessalonians 2 ¹⁰ And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. ¹¹ And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: ¹² That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
Don’t be deceived by the world when they use the word “love.” The world does not understand true love, because it’s not based on Scriptural teachings. God is love and anything that you want to know about love is found in His Son Jesus, who displays perfect love through His obedience to the Heavenly Father. Those who don’t love Jesus enough to obey Him, don’t have God, nor do they possess real love in their hearts. They might claim to love others, but without Christ Jesus and the teachings of scripture, it’s just…
