Heed The Warnings

How many times have you been driving through the country when you notice a sign on the side of the road? On this sign, it shows an arrow in the form of a right angle, warning you that there is a very sharp corner just ahead and that you should begin slowing down in preparation to turn.

Or sometimes you may have been walking through a store and you will notice a yellow or orange come or sign on the floor with the words, Caution, wet for floor. Maybe the floor has just been mopped so someone placed that sign there to alert people to be careful.

That is the purpose of signs, to either warn or alert. Now it is up to the person if they are going to do anything about it or not. Someone can approach that sharp corner on the highway and heed that sign that they had just seen by slowing down their car, or they can ignore it and continue on with their current speed. The latter option will almost assuredly result in costly consequences, but they were warned.

In the Bible, a sign is a miracle, or wonder. If we go to John 6, Jesus had just fed an incredible multitude of people with five loaves and two fish, and had then taken a ship across the sea of Galilee. Well, some of the people that Jesus had just fed came searching for Jesus, “And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.

Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?

Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.”John 6:25-33

Jesus had just fed over five thousand men, besides women and children, with five loaves of bread and two fish, yet they still sought for a sign! They had just seen an incredible miracle performed before them, but they still didn’t believe yet.

The Jews in John 10 wanted Jesus to tell them if He was the Christ or not.

John 10:23-25  “And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon’s porch.

Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.

Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me.”

Jesus had already told them yet they didn’t believe Him. He had done many miracles: healing the lame, giving sight to the blind, raised the dead back to life, yet they still didn’t believe Him. They sought for a sign, but they didn’t heed the ones they already had seen.

The works of Christ clearly show what He is, the Son of God. He doesn’t need to”prove” Himself anymore. If somebody doesn’t believe the works which He has already done, then there is nothing left to do. They have already been shown the signs, the only sign left for them now is the sign of the prophet Jonah.

Luke 11:29-32  “And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.

For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.

The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.”

Do you remember what happened between Jonah and Ninevah? Jonah had been sent by God to warn them that unless they repented, they would all be destroyed. They would perish.

Jesus is the Son of God. He has already shown that by everything that He did. We have the account of these signs and miracles in the Bible. People have already been given a sign. Some of them just choose to ignore it, so to them is given the sign that Jonah gave to Ninevah.

Repent. Or perish. Either believe the signs that Jesus is the Christ and follow Him, and live in eternity. Or, ignore those signs, and prepare for life in eternal damnation. The signs are right there in God’s Word. Will you heed the warnings?

In Christ,

Andrew
