Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today we are going to take a look at a passage of Scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
How many of you like to take a long walk on a nice summer morning? Minnesota has no lack of nice trails to walk on, but the one thing I always seem to notice first, is hearing all of the birds as they begin chirping. There are so many different sounds that they make, each of them possessing their own choral arrangements. It is music to one’s ears, as they lift up their own praise unto God. Many years ago, we would sit on a chair on our deck and feed the chickadees by hand. They would jump up in our lap for a small piece of bread, and then happily chirp a special tune for you, just as if they were saying thank you.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
The church is a place of music and singing, as we all join together to worship the Lord. Whether it’s two or three people, or even one-hundred, we all need to lift up our voices in unified worship unto the Lord. Music is a great way to learn the doctrines and teachings of our faith. After all, it can be very easy to remember a passage of scripture once it has been put to a melody. God is worthy of all of our praise, and the louder, the better.
“And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.” 2 Samuel 6:5
Psalms 150 ¹ Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. ² Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.
Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. ⁴ Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. ⁵ Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.
⁶ Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.
As we lift up our hearts to the Lord, we can let the words sink deeply into our minds, memorizing, and meditating on them as they educate us in God’s perfect will.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16
“Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;” Ephesians 5:19
James 5 ¹³ Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
When the brethren would gather together, many of them would bring a special song to sing.
“How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.” 1 Corinthians 14:26
Not only is it a time for music, but a time for prayer and physical healing.
James 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: ¹⁵ And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
There’s a very close relationship between God’s forgiveness and physical healing. When you have the faith to be healed, you can be forgiven for your sins at the same time. It’s the incredible healing power of the manifold grace of God.
Matthew 9 ² And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.
³ And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. ⁴ And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? ⁵ For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?
⁶ But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. ⁷ And he arose, and departed to his house. ⁸ But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.
Another example is found in the book of Matthew.
Matthew 15 ²⁹ And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there. ³⁰ And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus’ feet; and he healed them: ³¹ Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.
In some places, people couldn’t get healed by Jesus because of their lack of faith.
Mark 6 ⁵ And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. ⁶ And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.
In the church we also need to pray for each other, openly admitting our faults to not only God, but with each other.
James 5:16-18 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. ¹⁷ Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. ¹⁸ And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
John the Baptist listened to private confessions too.
Mark 1 ⁴ John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. ⁵ And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.
The church is to worship together in one Spirit, being forgiving with each other and merciful. Lift up your voices to God and thank Him for our daily bread, just like……
