Good morning and welcome in everyone. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
There are many different highways that are scattered throughout this country that are considered to be extremely wide. Some of these are the I-75 in Atlanta, with 15 lanes, and the I-405 in Los Angeles, with 14 lanes, But a section of highway was completed in 2008 in Houston Texas that would surpass the others in total width. It’s been claimed that over 200,000 vehicles drive across it daily. It is a section of interstate 10 known as the Katy freeway which has approximately 18 Lanes of traffic that passes through one of the busiest places in the country.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
For centuries people have tried to make the entrance way into heaven much wider than what it really is. When I first moved out to our cabin in the woods, there was grass on the center of the road all the way to the lake. It’s a road that not many people drive down. Roads are usually made wider to accommodate the amount of people who are using them. Like the Katy highway, we are in a day and age when many people are on a wide road that leads to destruction, a path that one must get off if they expect to someday obtain eternal life.
Matthew 7 ¹³ Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat. ¹⁴ Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
The reason why many people will eventually be destroyed, is because they never turned away from their own sinful living and fully submitted themselves to the teachings of scripture. This is why there is such a wide and inclusive form of false Christianity in the world today. Many people want to believe that they are going to be in heaven but they don’t want to reject the things of this world. The world has a sin issue, and unless they completely renounce it, they will reap God’s punishment for sin. This is why the scriptures warn that we must mortify the sinful deeds of the flesh and walk in the light.
Romans 8 ¹² Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. ¹³ For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
To live after the flesh, is to live in your sins. It is to follow after the things of the carnal nature, rather than the things of God. The path to Heaven is very narrow, and not many people are on it. This is because it is a path of obedience. Nothing sinful is going to enter into heaven, and this is why we need to change now, preparing for the world that is coming in the future. To obtain that world, will require repentance from the heart.
“I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” Luke 13:5
Repenting and doing the will of God is imperative for one’s own salvation. There will be those who profess the Christian Life, even involved in numerous activities in the name of Jesus, but will come up short of eternal life simply because they never repented of sin.
Matthew 7 ²¹ Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. ²² Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
²³ And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Genuine repentance is about turning away and departing from sinful living.
“Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” 2 Timothy 2:19
Many people may have known the Lord Jesus or even met Him, but that isn’t enough to get to heaven. What is required is turning away from sinfulness to do the will of God.
Luke 13 ²⁴ Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.
²⁵ When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are: ²⁶ Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.
²⁷ But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.
“For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.” Matthew 12:50
The Lord explains genuine repentance in the next passage.
Matthew 21 ²⁸ But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. ²⁹ He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. ³⁰ And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not. ³¹ Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. ³² For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.
God’s wrath is going to come on disobedient children, and this is why we need to come out from among them and be separate. We must learn to walk in the light as He is in the light.
Ephesians 5 ⁵ For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. ⁶ Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
⁷ Be not ye therefore partakers with them. ⁸ For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
⁹ (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) ¹⁰ Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
Although many people are on the wide road of sinful living, our salvation depends on finding the nearest exit. The pathway to eternal life is very narrow simply because not many people are on it, unlike all of the traffic on…..
