The Gravel Pit

Good morning and welcome in everyone.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

One of the first motorcycles that I ever owned was an old street bike. These are obviously meant for highway and road use, but I tended to take mine into the gravel pit instead. I would climb hills effortlessly just because of the sheer power of the four cylinder engine. But one day after a pouring rain, I ran through a 6 inch deep puddle of muddy water, and laid the motorbike down on its side. It was a very heavy bike and it fell right on top of my leg. Foolishly, I had worn shorts on that hot summer day, and could feel the hot muffler as it burned deeply into my leg. It took a little bit to get out from underneath it, and got burned so deeply that I still don’t have feeling in that part of my calf.

This reminds me of a Christian Life.

Many people who profess to follow the Christian faith are going to do the same thing. The only difference is that they will burn their inner conscience. They will return to the evil lifestyles that they once gave up for Christ, and turn into liars and hypocrites. In this state, they no longer have genuine feelings of contrition, refusing to reconcile with God and others whom they have wronged. Rather than repenting of their wicked deeds, they just don’t care anymore.

1 Timothy 4 ¹ Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; ² Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

I believe that we are in one of the most wicked times in history, as a false form of Christianity begins to rear its ugly head. It is no longer the faith that was once given to the Saints, but a church of abominations, spoken of in the book of Revelations. It is filled up with people who profess to believe in Jesus but have completely departed from the truth and the requirements of the Christian faith. Rather than accepting biblical teachings they give heed to the doctrines of devils, being led by false prophets and wolves in sheeps clothing. Their consciences are so burned, they actually take pleasure in those who get involved with sin.

Romans 1 ³¹ Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: ³² Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them..

These people appear religious, but they completely deny the truth of scripture, and live lives of wickedness instead.

2 Timothy 3:1-9 (KJB) This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as their’s also was.

Not everybody is going to make it to heaven. Some people will return to the sinful lifestyles that they once abandoned for Christ. Like Lot’s wife attempting to return to Sodom and Gomorrah, some people will get all cleaned up and then jump right back in the mud again.

2 Peter 2:20-22 (KJV) For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

“As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.” Proverbs 26:11

The love and obedience that they once had for Christ Jesus, will be replaced with disobedience and rebellion. When they reject the truth in such a manner, these people can no longer be brought to a place of repentance. It’s because they willfully choose to turn away from righteousness to live in their sins instead.

Hebrews 6:4-6 (KJB) For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

Hebrews 10 ²⁶ For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, ²⁷ But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. ²⁸ He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: ²⁹ Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? ³⁰ For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. ³¹ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

These people were walking in the truth at one time of their life, but then completely turned away from it. At this point, any righteous activities that they did when they were a Christian, will be rejected and forgotten.

“But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.” Ezekiel 18:24

When people reject God’s truth, the only thing left for them is to live and believe a lie.

2 Timothy 4 ³ For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; ⁴ And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Some people will reject the path of Christ, and jump right back on the wide road that leads to destruction. They will take God’s precious gift of righteousness, and throw it into the mud. Some people are going to burn their consciences so badly that they will live in sin and not even care anymore. Their hearts become numb to any feeling, just like the part of my leg that got burned out at….
