Good morning and welcome in everyone. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
Have you ever damaged something that belonged to your brother? Perhaps it was one of his toys from the bedroom, and you dropped it down the stairway and broke it. He was pretty upset with you, but you didn’t have the money to buy him another one. Just then your dad asked if he could pay for it.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
The Lord Jesus has paid our sin debt on the cross. Forbearance is the act of refraining from the enforcement of something that is due, such as a debt, right or obligation. Scriptures teach us that all of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God. We each have accrued our own sin debt, and it is sin that causes a breakdown in one’s relationship with God. But we can find our way back to Him through our precious Lord Jesus. By dying on the cross for our sins, He opened up the passageway to eternal life. But even though the wages of sin is death, we can find forgiveness with God when we confess our sins. What a wonderful opportunity granted to us through His loving forbearance. He took the punishment for the sins that we rightly deserved, paying for them on the cross. It’s the most precious gift one could ever obtain.
Micah 7 ¹⁸ Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.
¹⁹ He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.
The Apostle John didn’t want the church getting involved with sin, but Jesus pays the debt for us.
1 John 2 ¹ My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: ² And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
The Lord wants us to be very forbearing and forgiving with each other in the church. When confession happens, forgiveness can take place, as they are all washed under the bridge. The king in this passage was very forbearing with his own servant.
Matthew 18 ²¹ Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? ²² Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. ²³ Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.
²⁴ And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. ²⁵ But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. ²⁶ The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
²⁷ Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. ²⁸ But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.
²⁹ And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
³⁰ And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. ³¹ So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. ³² Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:
³³ Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? ³⁴ And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. ³⁵ So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.
You must remember that the world is still here because of the grace of God. God mercifully gives each of us the opportunity to confess our faults and repent. Our God is very merciful and kind. We need to be this forgiving with each other.
“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” James 5:16
Remember that the Apostle Peter denied the Lord three separate occasions, but the Lord Jesus completely restored Him three times. We must come boldly to the throne of grace in our time of need.
Hebrews 4 ¹⁴ Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. ¹⁵ For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. ¹⁶ Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Confession is the path to one’s own salvation.
Psalms 51 ¹ (To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.) Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. ² Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. ³ For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. ⁴ Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
God gives us a free gift of His grace so that we can repent from dead works, and grow into what He wants us to become.
Romans 3 ²⁴ Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: ²⁵ Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
Colossians 3 ¹² Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
¹³ Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. ¹⁴ And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
Jesus has already paid for our sin debts when He laid down His own life for our salvation. Confession is the road to remission, through His incredible…….
