What Would You Choose

Good morning and welcome in everyone.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to ask you one question.

If someone gave you the chance to ask for whatever you wanted in this world, what would it be? You could only choose one thing and nothing else, what would you pick? Many people might ask for riches, or a 10 million dollar mansion. Others might ask for a long life or to be a powerful and influential world leader. One chance, one choice,… what would you choose?

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

This happened in the life of Solomon. He could have asked God for anything he wanted, but you know what he desired most of all? Wisdom.

2 Chronicles 1 ⁷ In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.

⁸ And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast shewed great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead. ⁹ Now, O LORD God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude.

¹⁰ Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great? ¹¹ And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king: ¹² Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.

Each day people pray to God for all kinds of different things. Sometimes they only ask for things to consume them upon their own lusts. Other times they are self-centered, and self-seeking, only thinking about themselves rather than others. Solomon wanted to benefit God’s people, and there was only one desire that mattered above all others in his heart. It was to obtain the wisdom of God. His request showed loving concern for the people of God. It manifested humility in requesting something for others rather than himself.

In order to grow in one’s faith we need to grow in the wisdom of God’s Holy Word, but many people are more concerned about seeking after the things of this world. Consider the life of Moses who was seeking God so much that he gave up everything that he possessed. He quite possibly could have been the next Pharaoh, but turned away from the treasures in Egypt to find the riches in Christ. Moses and Solomon possessed the same attitude, because they were both men who were seeking to be filled with the wisdom of God. The Apostles of Christ were the same way, forsaking their homes, families, and occupations to grow in the knowledge of God’s will. God’s wisdom is one of the greatest treasures that you will ever find, and nothing is to be compared to it.

Proverbs 8 ¹⁰ Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.

¹¹ For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

When the Lord Jesus came to the Earth, some people wouldn’t even listen to the wisdom that He spoke. He told that generation… a greater than Solomon is here. This is because He is the source of wisdom, Truth, and salvation for all those who seek Him with a diligent heart.

“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.” Acts 4:13

“For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.” Luke 21:15

“And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.” Acts 6:10

Seeking the wisdom of God is the first wise choice that anybody could ever make in their life. It is one of the most important steps towards our own salvation because our feet are placed on the path of Spiritual knowledge. It is only through God’s wisdom that we can understand the direction that we must take, by learning to fear Him, serve Him, and obey Him. There is nothing greater you could obtain, because when this Earth and everything in it perishes, faithfulness to God’s precepts will result in life everlasting.

Proverbs 2 ¹ My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; ² So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; ³ Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; ⁴ If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; ⁵ Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. ⁶ For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

Colossians 2 ² … to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; ³ In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Many people consider themselves very wise in the things of this world, but in the end, all of that knowledge will amount to nothing. This is because we can only obtain eternal life through the understanding of Spiritual things found in Christ. In order to grow truly wise, one must first become a fool, and seek after the wisdom that will never fade away.

1 Corinthians 3 ¹⁸ Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. ¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.

The only way to obtain Spiritual wisdom is by seeking Spiritual wisdom.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5

Remember that God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him and He can recompense people anyway that He desires. He can grant all the desires of one’s heart, and His benevolent favor is unending. It all depends on what is most important to you. Got heard the sincere request of Solomon, and was so pleased by it that he not only granted him wisdom, but also gave him the riches of the world.

“And king Solomon passed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom.”  2 Chronicles 9:22

So, what is the most important thing on your wishlist? Is it what Solomon asked for? If you had one chance to ask for anything that you could have,….
